Product Description:

"It's just common sense!" Actually, it's the Blue Book Common Sense Reading Program and yes, everything about this program is common sense. A very complete program organized around quality children's literature (like all LLATL programs) and covering phonics, reading, spelling, grammar, vocabulary, handwriting, and higher-order reasoning. Phonics instruction is systematic, introducing a few sounds at a time and providing opportunities to read a "real" (small story book) book which uses those sounds. The literature component - carefully selected children's favorites - reminds students that the reason for all the hard work in phonics is the joy of reading wonderful books. And woven through both of these elements is comprehensive instruction in all aspects of language arts. Relying heavily on Ruth Beechick's principles for teaching reading (including her letter dice activities), the program includes a wide variety of activities appealing to all learning styles. The teacher's manual is a homeschooler's dream with all the work having been done for you, taking you step-by-step through the 36-week program. New skills are listed for each lesson with a materials list included at the beginning. Almost no teacher preparation is needed - you teach as you read. All answers are provided within the lesson. Higher-order thinking activities are italicized. Examples and diagrams are user-friendly including the easy-to-follow references to the Student Activity Book. Each of the four parts (readiness, short vowels, consonant blends and short vowels, and long vowels) concludes with an evaluation for determining your child's readiness for the next level. The Student Activity Book contains the materials (except for household and school supplies) needed for cut and paste, word wheels, flip books, picture sequencing, story-telling puppets, PLUS handwriting pages that teach all upper and lower case letters, numbers, and punctuation. The comfortable, natural handwriting method that isn't exactly traditional, modern, or italic was developed by the authors. This handwriting instruction is coordinated with the phonics and includes pages for children to carefully complete and display or give as gifts.

The Student Activity Book is consumable, even having an easy-release binding that allows for clean page removal. Even the back cover is put to good use providing the miniature book covers to be added to the personal reading chart that marks the child's progress. 28 separate readers cover short vowels, blends (bridge readers), and long vowels. They are small-sized for little hands and include black-and-white illustrations. Stories are engaging which is a good thing since a week's worth of learning activities are built around them. The student uses puppets to retell the stories, completes sequencing activities with a series of reader-related events, and answers comprehension questions. One interesting aspect of the teacher-student interaction concerning these readers is that the week's lesson starts off with the teacher reading the small book to the child. After several lessons thoroughly covering the new phonics steps and practice reading parts of the story, the student concludes the week with the successful reading of the small book. This is an effective variation of the typical approach because the goal of reading the book is always before the student. The materials packet is a useful collection of color-coded letter and word cards to use for learning and review along with cards used for reinforcement games and, of course, the letter dice (to be assembled from cardstock patterns). While this part of the program is not exactly consumable - you could use the various components again - the components do get a workout. If you are expecting to use the program with another child, you'll want to save these items and covering them with clear contact paper to preserve them would also be a good idea. The program includes the Teacher's Manual, the Student Activity Book, the 28 Readers, and the Materials Packet.

We sell additional Student Activity Books, Reader Sets, and Material Packets so you can use the program with a second student. Well-known children's literature (Read-Aloud Library) is suggested each week, so at the same time your child is learning phonics, he is also learning other important reading skills such as literal recall, comprehension, predicting outcome, and drawing conclusions. These books are an integral part of the program and the Student Activity Book relies on them. Although usually available at the local library, for your convenience we also sell them. They are listed in order of use. Although this program focuses on first grade skills, it would be possible to use this program with a "ready" kindergartner. It would also work well with a slightly older child who is still a just-getting-started reader. ~ Janice

Relying heavily on Ruth Beechick's principles for teaching reading (including her letter dice activities), the program includes a wide variety of activities appealing to all learning styles.

The current 3rd edition features updated covers and clearer day-by-day instruction; there are also updates throughout the series to reflect changes in how research is conducted. Also, there is clearer direction for making personalized spelling lists. Some lessons have been "switched-out" to give students exposure to more classic literature. Since the original series was written over several years by two different authors, this 3rd edition has been tweaked to make it more consistent. A few out-of-print books have been replaced as well.

The Teacher Book is a homeschooler's dream; all the work has been done for you, taking you step-by-step through the 36-week/36 Lesson program. The Lessons are grouped into "Parts" and each is divided into five days of detailed instructions. New skills are listed for each lesson and necessary supplies are included at the beginning. There is virtually no teacher preparation needed; you teach as you read. All answers are provided within the lesson. Examples and diagrams are user-friendly including the easy-to-follow references to the Student Book. Periodic assessments are provided to help you determine your childs readiness for the next "Part." The Student Book contains the materials (except for household and school supplies) needed for cut-and-paste, word wheels, flip books, picture sequencing, story-telling puppets, and handwriting pages. The comfortable, natural handwriting method that isnt exactly traditional, modern, or italic was developed by the authors. This handwriting instruction is coordinated with the phonics and includes pages for children to carefully complete and display or give as gifts. The Student Book is consumable with perforated pages. Even the back cover is put to good use providing the miniature book covers to be added to the personal reading chart that marks the childs progress. Phonics concepts are reinforced in separate beginning Readers. They are small-sized for little hands and include black-and-white illustrations. Stories are engaging which is a good thing since the weeks learning activities are built around them. The student uses puppets to retell the stories, completes sequencing activities with a series of reader-related events, and answers comprehension questions. One interesting aspect of the teacher-student interaction concerning these readers is that the weeks lesson starts off with the teacher reading either the small book (Blue) or a part of a reader (Red) to the child. After several lessons thoroughly covering the new phonics concepts and practice reading parts of the story, the student concludes the week with the successful reading of the same reading selection. This is an effective variation of the typical approach because the goal of reading the book is always before the student. The Materials Packet (Blue Program only) is a useful collection of color-coded letter and word cards for learning and review along with cards used for reinforcement games and, of course, the letter dice (to be assembled from cardstock patterns). While this part of the program is not exactly consumable - you could use the various components again - the components do get a workout. If you are expecting to use the program with another child, you'll want to save these items, possibly laminating them. However, we sell additional Material Packets as well as Student Books and Reader Sets so you can easily use the program with a second student. Well-known children's literature (Read-Aloud Library) is suggested each week, so at the same time your child is learning phonics, he is also learning other important reading skills such as literal recall, comprehension, predicting outcome, and drawing conclusions. I was looking for something that was literature based and taught all aspects of language arts together without a ton of moving parts. I also needed it to be a solid phonics/reading program. This seemed to fit the bill.

I love this learning to read series. I have tried some major name brand reading programs and they were complicated and tons of work on my part. This book is so easy, it has everything you need for all language arts areas and your child learns to read easily.

I chose LLATL because it included readers and a workbook and was phonics based with an emphasis on literature. My daughter is advanced in reading comprehension but more typical for her age in motor skills/writing and this program seemed adaptable to fit our needs.

It covers what I need to teach my son how to read who has struggled to read for years. I am really hopeful that this will be the thing that really helps him push past the road blocks we have been dealing with in his reading.

My oldest has done several years of this program already and we love it. Now it's time to start my younger kids with it, but we don't have this level yet.

I ordered the Yellow series for my 6 year old going into 2nd grade and thought this Blue series would be perfect for my 4 year old going into Kindergarten. It seems like the grade levels on these are a little off, but that's just my opinion.

What extra materials are needed to use with an additional student?
Upton Family on Jul 12, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Many of the materials could be used with a second child but you will want/need an extra copy of the Student Activity Book.

Is it necessary for the student to know the full alphabet and/or letter sounds before using this?
User on May 30, 2018
BEST ANSWER: No it is not required for the students to know their full alphabet and/or sounds before using this curriculum. They will gain the knowledge by the time they complete this book. My daughter (6yo) started on this book after being in PS kindergaten, where she had learned her alphabet, phonics, etc... My son (5yo) did not attend kindergarten and only knew "most" of his alphabet when he started. They were both at similar levels upon completion. Hope this helps!
Is this the 3rd edition that was just released, or the 2nd edition?

Gentle
This was a nice gentle way to introduce reading. I enjoyed teaching it, and my younger two enjoyed using it. One pro for the program is that it uses both phonics and sight words, so my kids were reading the cute little readers right away. We had switched from Logic of English Foundations after 2 years of tears and no progress. The one con, and my reason for only 4 stars is that it doesn't seem to lead into the Red Book very well. Two of my kids finished this program, able to read all readers and identify the sounds and sight words introduced, but neither were able to jump right into the Red Book. It took us some extra work doing fluency and long vowel combinations to work up to it. For the price, and the gentle approach it gives I do feel it is worth doing a little extra remedial work.

Love this program
I used this to teach my two eldest children to read. For my third, we tried a couple of other programs because I thought I was bored with it. Well, we’re back to LLATL blue for him because it is so good. He is thriving with this curriculum.

Fabulous Phonics/Reading Program
I have waited till my first grader is halfway through this program to write the review and my mind (and hers) hasn't changed- it is fabulous! The readers are great, the reading aloud suggestions are good, the hands on letter cards and activities like making word wheels out of animals are fun. I am not one that likes busy work but most of the activities my daughter enjoys so we keep them. We did a leisurely pace of phonics in kindergarten and this has been a good program following that. Had we not done phonics yet, this program may have moved too quickly. If your child has done some phonics- this program may be perfect. I am surprised it is not in Cathy Duffy's top recommendations. My daughter really, really enjoys it. We are now at the midpoint and I love the review weeks before moving on. Not repetitive, just review in a different way. I will admit, I've not encountered a language arts program I don't like but I think part of that is b/c I'm picky and end up usually adapting at least a little anyway. Adaptions on this program: Many of the daily exercises do not include handwriting so we keep an extra inexpensive (Getty-Dubay italic) book around as I like to have daily handwriting. Also, we do a lot of daily reading aloud so I will sometimes skip the book recommendations they have for this- however, their recommendations are awesome so this varies whether or not we skip it. We have some fun easy readers recommended from "Teaching Your Child to Read with Children's Books" that I like to add about weekly as well. Teacher and student give this program a "thumbs up".

Wonderful for beginning readers
I adore this series! As a longtime homeschooling parent, we have tried many LA programs, this one is the best! Easy to use for both parent and child, next to no prep time and short and condensed lessons, it is a breeze to use. If you are looking for a program that will aid you in teaching your child to read, this is perfect. Although this book is stated as being for first grade, if your child seems ready to learn their ABC's earlier, I recommend starting this book earlier as well.

I LOVE this program! It comes with everything you need and it tells you what to do each day. With multiple children to teach, that was a huge plus. I noticed my daughter’s reading skills have been vastly improved, this program progresses in a very natural and easy to follow manner.

Working Well
I just started my son on this program, we are doing it at an accelerated pace. He already knows how to read so we don't spend as much time on the phonics parts. My 4yo son is also doing it with us and is enjoying it. Some parts of the program are quite repetitive but this would probably be necessary if this is your child's first reading instruction. The readers are simple and cute. So far so good.

Quality program, but a little outdated
This program is thorough and effective. An encyclopedia is recommended so it's a little out dated in that sense, but the rest of the content is good.

Great all-inclusive program
I have twin boys who struggled with reading. We tried all the usual books and things but nothing stuck with them. I tried this as a hope and they love it! The reading progress chart gets them excited to make progress. The interactive components (not fluff) is perfect for engaging them and helping me know if they are understanding. The handwriting is a bit old fashioned but other than that this has been great for us. If you have kids who wiggle and don't always like sitting still for lessons then this is perfect
