American history your way! This exciting history supplement is designed to place your children in the midst of everyday life during a significant event in our nation's history. Each book contains five historically accurate situations in which children take on the persona of an average person who must make critical decisions related to the facts presented. Once your child selects the path they wish to take, they are directed to the next page of reading, where once again, they must make choice on how to proceed. All in all, four different endings are possible within the story line. Each decision your child makes will have an ultimate outcome--some triumphant, some tragic.

Excited to see how this works? Let me share from the Adventures from the 1900s-1920s. You are on an ocean liner torpedoed in the Atlantic during World War I. You are faced with two options: a) Escape in the first life boat or b) Wait to see if the damage is very bad. You chose option "a"escape in the first life boat. Turning to the referenced page you learn that you are able to clamber onto a lifeboat. As the lifeboat swings wildly side to side, you cling onto the side with all your strengthyour lifeboat hits the water hard. Water is seeping through a crack in the bottomEverybody is rowing the lifeboat with all their strength. But you are going too slowlythe great ocean liner is about to come down and you fear you will be dragged under. What do you do? a) Stay with the lifeboat or b) Jump out and swim. I will let you (and your students) determine the next action to take and final outcome.

I found this to be an enjoyable method for bringing history to life and must confess I quickly read through each of the story options-just to see what happened! I was spellbound by the situations presented and found myself eager to learn what would happen to my character through the choices I made.

To further enhance learning, at the conclusion of the story line, students are given a short reading comprehension activity based on interesting facts related to the time period. There are also individual and group activity suggestions to further develop learning about the historical time period. This series would make an exciting addition to your history curriculum or could provide a framework for creating your own history study. 53 pgs, pb. ~ Deanne
