Surprisingly Delighted
I purchased Saxon 8/7 HS Kit with Teacher CD-ROMs when my daughter began struggling with pre-algebra concepts and was unable to continue with 7th grade Horizons math by Alpha Omega. Horizons is spiral, but concepts are not continuously practiced through the year, so some concepts can be forgotten. Horizons is a bit more advanced and faster-paced, but does not have sufficient teacher instruction with examples, or enough student practice with the pre-algebra course. However, Saxon, with the Teacher CDs has proven to be just what my daughter needed to fully grasp important terms and concepts (with sufficient Saxon examples & practice problems with solutions). I'm surprised to see her delve into her Saxon math assignments with confidence and interest! Fully recommend!

A solid program
After using a popular computer based math program, we've chosen to switch back to Saxon. My oldest child used the computer based math until her junior year. We quickly realized that she was not adequately prepared for the math portion of the sat. So we switched her to Saxon advanced math. This rigerous program greatly helped prepare her for the sat. The problems In Saxon are set up in a similar format to the sat. Saxon is a solid math program--which does require parental involvement. It's not fancy, but it's the only program we'll use.

We have used Saxon Math for several years and it has worked well for our children.

We used Horizons Math from grades 1 through 6, but when my daughter hit 7th grade and Pre-algebra, the Horizons (by Alpha Omega) Math did not have very many examples to help her learn a new concept. There were no CDs or Teacher's teaching guides to help with presenting new math concepts. My daughter was starting to stumble in math for the first time! Saxon Teacher CD-Roms was exactly what we both needed! We are very pleased with the switch to Saxon.

We've used Saxon with all of our children - all with different learning styles. It not only works, it is a superb math program. Starting our 18th (good gravy!) year of homeschooling.

I have read great reviews on Saxon Homeschool 8/7 preparing kiddos for Algebra.
I picked the whole package, because we want to have the Teacher CD-Roms which explain everything well.
Your price was the best, and I love ordering from Rainbow.

This is an excellent math program that keeps us on schedule because of the way the curriculum explains the concepts to the student. We couple the book explanation with Saxon Teacher DVD's. Love it!! We have used it for three years.
Beth M on Apr 22, 2016
This program is consistent, easy to use, and well-organized. Saxon covers a lot of material and makes it very simple for parents to implement because much of the teaching is done by simply reading the prompts in the books. Some students may be able to read through the books and complete the work independently due to the books' organization, teaching style and simplicity. We love it!

Saxon is more challenging and the lessons have problems from previous chapters to keep the concepts fresh in their minds.

LOF wasn't a good fit for dd. We used Horizons and were happy with it, but it cuts off after Alg1. We wanted to start all the high school maths on the same curriculum. We're hoping Saxon is a better fit!

Which book should I choose for 8th grade math (algebra)?
A shopper on Oct 8, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Your child should take the Saxon placement test to determine which book is most appropriate for her. Saxon 8/7 covers pre-algebra concepts so if you are looking for an Algebra book, you'll have to go beyond that.
