spelling without tears
This is the only spelling program we've tried that doesn't bring my dyslexic son to tears. The repetition, patterns, and gentle progression are what he needed to build confidence and skill.

Excellent choice
This book of spelling begins with basic words and then builds upon then with new proper beginning and ending sounds. It's very structured, helpful and meaningful. They are not just random words. Vocabulary is expanded too as new words are introduced. Example is stop, stops, stopped, stopping, unstoppable

Love Sequential Spelling!!
We made the switch for our son who is a very logical thinker. I wish I had done it sooner... for the first time is over a year, he isn't fighting me to do spelling! And I am seeing it click in his brain. He gets it now!

Good, but not quite what I expected
I like that it is structured to do spelling everyday with some of the same words or forms of the words. I expected to stay in one word family for a while longer before transitioning to another.

I do not believe this program should be used for kids who are struggling spellers The format made sense to me but when carried out my sons were in tears- an uncommon occurrence around hereI believe this curriculum is best suited for kids who need a "nudge" in formal spelling instruction

I remember attending a workshop by Don McCabe author of AVKO Sequential Spelling many years ago I could see first hand that the way he was grouping words by spelling pattern was so much more effective (and logical) than the disconnected memorization techniques generally used for spelling The length of the word is totally immaterial in Dons approach A root word expanded step by step with different (or additional) prefixes and suffixes is readily recognized and mastered by young spellers instilling confidence Weve used all 7 levels and heartily recommend

I'm new to homeschooling and my daughter, who would be in middle school, needs help with spelling. I appreciate their downloadable assessment quiz, which placed her as needing to begin (not at the very beginning) in Level 1.

We have tried a number of different methods of spelling with my dyslexic son with little success I have read he may have success with this so we are going to give it a try. I like that the method was developed by a dyslexic.

Between Sequential Spelling and All About Spelling, both of which are highly recommended for dyslexic learners, this seemed to fit my child's learning style better and is more affordable.

Have a child with dysgraphia, and standard rule based phonics and spelling approaches not working. Hoping a program developed by a guy who suffers from dyslexia will help his spelling.
CHRISTINE J on May 23, 2017
After using several "rule-based" spelling curriculums with no success, I wanted to try a new approach.
Jennifer C on May 19, 2017
One of my children wasn't getting spelling using traditional workbooks,p. He had struggled with phonics and sounding words out. I read in several places that SS was a great product for my visual learner. Two things have helped. First, the focus on word families (seeing patterns). The lists start with one syllable words, add to them. We are practicing syllabication (breaking big words into word parts) and adding prefixes and endings. He is not troubled by big words, but can focus on parts.

This was recommended from several sources for my dyslexic son. Looking forward to trying it!

Trying to find a gentle tool to help my poor speller. We use a Charlotte Mason style of learning and this looks simpler and gentler than other spelling curriculum.

Desperation after trying 5 spelling methods and books with no retention by my 12 year old son. After 3 weeks, I see him retaining far better than with other spelling series. It is repetitive but this along with All About Spelling which provides rules and their uses, seems to be a great combo for him.
Lori B on Nov 15, 2016
Recommended by a friend. My son is very weak in spelling and I needed something simple for him to understand.

I wanted a simple way to have my kids practice spelling. My 10 year old who struggles with spelling took the placement test and he will begin at level 1.

Tried all about spelling for my daughter. It is a great program, but did not work well for her. She is 9 and can hardly spell. Hoping this will work.

Do you need the Student book to use this? I already have the Teacher's text and the student book looks as though it is just for writing the answers.
Becky on Jul 10, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It's not completely necessary. You could use a notebook to accomplish the same thing. However, on the back of each page (where the student writes his spelling words) there is a little activity for extra practice that you'd miss out on. If you're on a budget (aren't we all), you could skip the student workbook. If you think you'd like the extra practice pages and money is no object, I'd go for it.
Is the student book needed? I already have the Teacher's book. The Student's book appears to just be a response book. Is there any instruction in it?
A shopper on Jul 10, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It does not have any instruction in it. The program can be used without the student book; it just depends on what works best for you. Every other page of the student book is just lined and numbered for writing the daily spelling list on. The other side of each page has some sort of student activity using the current list: scrambled words, word searches, sentences to write, listing words created from letters of a larger word, fill in the blank in sentences. For us it was nice to break out the daily routine and do one of the activity pages, but we did not do all of them. Every 40 lessons there is a test page, but again, it can be done without the response book.
how do i know what level to buy?
A shopper on May 24, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The program says to always start with level 1. I have a dyslexic daughter that I started in level 1 in 7th grade and it has been challenging to her.
