I chose Saxon Algebra 1 with the DVD so my child could complete his math lesson on his own. We are around lesson 30 and he is enjoying the DVD class.

My children all prefer this teacher to the Dive teaching DVD so we will continue to purchase Mastering Series DVDs with the Saxon Program.

We need some level of instruction for Saxon Algebra 1. We researched and decided that Art Reed will do a good job preparing us to do each lesson in the Saxon Algebra 1 book and so we bought the Saxon package with his DVD's. We started with Saxon 3 back in 3rd grade and feel confident to continue with this thorough program.

We 'tried' public school for my 7th grader last year. I withdrew her because she was failing math (and too much drama). I filled in her "Math Holes" with Saxon and then started her on lesson 80 of Saxon 8/7. She then studied independently and ACED every single lesson thereafter! Super proud of her! So here's my question: Is pre Algebra necessary or can I go straight to Algebra 1? I wouldn't normally consider it but she got 100s on every assignment from Saxon 8/7 lessons 90-120! I even hid my grade book and watched her work a lesson, thinking she might have cheated! She sure wasn't! Just needed the right tools!

We have not done Saxon 8/7, but we did Saxon Algebra 1/2 last year so I can’t really give a comparison. But, a homeschooling friend, who uses Saxon for her own kids and tutors others (and was a Math major in college!) has told me that Saxon 8/7 and Algebra 1/2 are the same and you don’t really need to do both. If you’ve done one or the other then you should be ok moving on to Algebra I.

My son had no problems going right into Algebra 1. I was told that the Pre-Algebra is more for kids who struggled with Saxon 8/7. I did ask the opinion of my sister, who teaches 8th grade, and she suggested Algebra 1 as well. Especially since my son didn't struggle with Saxon 8/7, he had a good foundation for starting Algebra. Hope this helps!

If your student did well in Saxon 8/7, it is recommended to go straight to Algebra 1. Congrats for a job well done!
