Category Description for Wordly Wise 3000 (All Editions)

Wordly Wise 3000 works. It's a vocabulary-building program that grows with the student, and makes vocabulary acquisition interesting and entertaining. Current editions (4th and 3rd) of Wordly Wise 3000 share a similar format giving interesting word histories, dealing with usage issues, and exposing common usage pitfalls. There are 20 lessons in each level plus five review lessons. Typical lessons contain an alphabetized list of fifteen words (fewer words in lower levels) with a brief, dictionary-type entry for each. These include part of speech, concise definition, and proper usage of the word in the context of an interesting sentence that provides a mnemonic anchor for the word. Following are activity sections which vary slightly with the edition. Crossword puzzles and hidden message puzzles are used for review. The overall word list for the series consists of 3000 words; their selection based on frequency, grade-level literature, textbooks, and SAT-prep books. Course components include a Student Book, an Answer Key, a Test Book, and a Teacher Resource Book. Levels K and 1 of both editions differ a bit from Grades 2-12 levels.

Category Description for Wordly Wise 3000 (4th Ed.)

Revised, with a 2018 copyright, Wordly Wise 3000, 4th edition is still the same great vocabulary-building program that many of you love. Word lists have remained the same in almost all levels. [Lesson 17 of Book 12 has a different story, but the word lists remain the same; and lesson 12 of Book 9 has a different title for the story, but the story is actually the same as in the 3rd edition and uses the same word list.]

Kindergarten and Book 1 are technically a 2nd edition although their covers match the 4th edition books. The copyright is updated to 2018, but there are no content changes in either level. The structure of the Kindergarten and 1st grade levels are a bit different. These vocabulary-building activities include selecting the correct picture in the workbook while the parent reads a story aloud from the Teacher Pack. The unique, two-week lesson plans in these beginning books teach and reinforce words and concepts in 20-25 minutes a day. Teacher Packs (which are a must-have) for K and 1 include extensive lesson plans, Concept and Picture Cards, read-aloud stories and poems, extension and challenge activities, blackline masters, formal and informal assessments for each lesson, assessment checklists and more.

Levels 2-12 are a mixture of new activities and those similar to previous editions. Older edition answer keys and teacher resources will not work with the 4th edition Student Books. There are formatting changes, as well, in the Student Books which have an updated look. Books 2 and 3 still have 15 lessons (10 words per lesson), and Books 4-12 still have 20 lessons each (15 words per lesson).

New activities include Rate Your Word Knowledge, which is a reproducible sheet found in the Teacher Resource Book to assess word knowledge before beginning a lesson. Using Words in Context is intended to strengthen a students ability to determine meaning based on context. Making Connections is to help students make connections between words and understand word relationships. Determining Meanings helps students understand word parts (prefixes, roots, suffixes) while reinforcing understanding. Completing Sentences allows students to demonstrate understanding of words by completing sentences. Vocabulary Extension is found at the end of each lesson, and focuses on just one word from that lesson in order to develop a deeper understanding of vocabulary and application.

Wordly Wise 3000 is now in partnership with Quizlet.com where students can practice their vocabulary for additional reinforcement with online games and exercises. Complete instructions to access a 12 month subscription is on the inside cover of the student book. Note: the code is invalid 24 months after the "printed in" date on the copyright page.

Teacher Resource Books include teachers guides for the lessons, reproducible tests and reviews, vocabulary activities (including word webs and semantic maps), options for group or individual instruction, pacing options, and answer keys for the tests and workbooks. [Please note that there is a page that references teacher access to Quizlet, a digital application including games that allows teachers to see students' progress and activity from the past day, week, or year. The access code is NOT included in the Teacher Resource books and is only available to purchasers of "classroom sets", which are not currently available from us. However, students will still have access to Quizlet through their own student book with instructions included inside the front cover.]

Tests are designed to prepare students for standardized tests; the format is largely multiple-choice. There are tests for each lesson as well as cumulative midterms and finals. The Teacher Resource Book includes reproducible tests as well as answers to the Student Book. However, if you do not think that an intensive, thorough teacher guide is necessary, non-reproducible Test Books (with answers) and Answer Keys (for the exercises in the Student Books) are available separately.

For convenience in ordering, we've also created Grade Level Sets that include a Student Book, Test Book and Answer Key. Teacher Resource Books are only included in the Grade Level Sets for Grades K and 1. Teacher Resource Books are a separate purchase at the upper levels.
