Inexpensive, easy to use, engaging and humorous drawings
This phonics series was a referral from an aunt who homeschooled a large family. My purpose for the workbooks was for pupil review of phonics concepts than for testing purposes, so did not purchase the teacher books initially. The child-drawn black and white pictures and simplicity of layout are engaging and refreshing... not overbearing; so my youngsters did as many pages as they desired on a daily basis. Helpful hint: One could skip through some of these according to specific phonetic content needing concentration. Inside the front cover of Book 3 is CONTENTS page containing thirteen Lessons which focus on silent -e words, consonant blends, consonant digraphs (sh, th, wh, ch, -tech, -ng, -ck), vowel digraphs (ee, ea, ai, ay, oa, ow), 2 Review pages, and 4 Posttest pages. Inside the back cover is a table labeled Explode the Code Book 3 and lists 9 Sight Words and 22 Direction Words along with a list of ALL books in is series from Educators Publishing Service. This book has 110 pages.
I did not give five stars due to not using the Beyond the Code materials for comprehension and reasoning skills which accompany Books 1-4.
Note: My youngest pupil does not prefer to write words on the 3/4-inch line scale which is normally used for primary grades.

I use level 3 for Phonics for my 5 year old and Spelling for my 7 year old who struggles with writing. I think it is a very nice spine but needs a few games added to spice it up to appeal as a good reading program. The price is well worth it though. They are learning but it is a smidge boring. I hated Explode the Code Online though.

Definitely does the job
We just started book 3 after finishing 1 and 2, and it's definitely making things easier. It's low fuss, low prep and has greatly reduced whining about school. The new edition is definitely easier to read than the 1st edition.

taught us all to read better
This series continues to pull my kids along, reading well and fluently. I traditionally modify the writing requirements, but my five-year-old has taken a fair chunk on himself anyway in this third book. He and I continue to love the silly pictures and sentences as well as the pacing.

BEST ANSWER: I personally think you will not need to supplement S to W&R. It is a very complete program using lots of learning approaches so I really doubt your student(s) will fatigue from the program or need anything to switch to for a bit or supplement with. I would focus 100% on S to W & R and enjoy the progress your students make.
This recommendation comes from a mom who is about to embark on her own SWR journey. But my student is an alum of Logic of English Foundations A-C, which was based off of the learning methods of SWR. My guy had lots o fun learning with this method. We r using SWR to go beyond what LOE provided him.
I would focus entirely on SWR before you decide to complement/supplement with anything. It's a wonderful method of learning and is completely stand alone in its thoroughness. It's amazing. If only I had learned phonograms and such as a student rather than having to learn it as an adult, my spelling especially, would be all the better for it...
Best wishes!
