Description

In college, I joined a television club as well as a movie-making club. Between the two, I fell head-over-heels in love with video production as well as making those skills accessible to students who wanted to try filmmaking. When I picked up this book, I felt that same excitement again! Learn to Speak Film is an incredibly detailed yet accessible introduction to movie making and the film industry. The wealth of information is laid out in a very clear format and progresses in logical order. Readers will learn how to write and format a script and work through pre-production (planning, writing a shot list, picking a cast, finding locations, etc.). Next, shoot the film learn about techniques for camera, sound, lighting, wardrobe, and craft services (film speak for feeding the cast and crew). Last comes post-production, which includes editing, sound, and music. This book also contains promotional tips for getting your films into screenings and film festivals, because your movie was made to be shared! I am very impressed at how this book presents an accurate approach to the film industry, but still makes it very accessible for newbies. If you or your child has a story to tell, this book is a great way to get started. 96 pgs, sc. Laura

Publisher's Description of Learn to Speak Film

"Seen any good movies lately?" is a question almost as commonly asked as "How are you?" We all love watching movies, as much today as when film began. But with all the information and technology that's readily available, today's filmgoers know that making a movie isn't an act of magic!

By starting with the most basic formula (images + motion = film), Learn to Speak Film does away with the special effects and gets to the heart of what makes movies so much more than just something to watch on a Friday night. The lessons within these pages range from choosing a camera to writing dialogue, from handling criticism to preparing a press kit. Whether young readers just love Oscar Night or want to pursue a career as a screenwriter, set designer, or director, Learn to Speak Film will appeal to the inner film buff in all of us.
