Description

Rural Kentucky in 1923 was nothing like the big cities of the day. In fact, it didn't feel like the 20th century at all in the Appalachian Mountains. Poverty and disease were rampant and families were far from hospital care. One nurse began a program called the Frontier Nursing Service. Since the families were often hard to reach, they traveled on horseback. The story is amazing and true. It's always interesting to read about something new and unique when it comes to American history. I liked the dialogue as it made you feel as if you are in the room. I can see this as an addition to an American history or US geography study. It could also serve as a specific study on American women in history. It's a short, yet important story to know. ~Sara

Publisher's Description of Mary on Horseback: Three Mountain Stories

Master storyteller Rosemary Wells tells the incredible true story of a World War I nurse who brought medical care to the Appalachians.

Mary Breckinridge, trained as a nurse during World War I, rode on horseback into the isolated mountains of Appalachia and never looked back. Instead, she spent her life fording icy streams and climbing untracked mountains to bring medical help to those in need. More nurses on horseback joined Mary . . . and the Frontier Nursing Service was born. Mary's story is amazing. And it is true.
