First-graders can learn to read and spell at the same time! In fact, spelling is an important part of phonics class. These colorful charts, large enough for whole-class viewing (17.5" x 22.5"), have all 30 grade 1 spelling lists. They are used for class teaching and for copying spelling words during seatwork time. For your convenience, each chart is labeled with the identifying spelling list number as well as the lesson number in which the chart is introduced in phonics class. Each chart is written in cursive just as the words should look when copied on the student's writing tablet. Includes 15 attractively illustrated charts printed front/back for a total of 30 charts.

A component of the Abeka English program, you could use this convenient vocabulary with spelling program on its own. A schedule, including spelling and vocabulary (as well as poetry memorization), is in the main English/Language Arts Curriculum Lesson Plans for each grade level. The student book has seven lessons per quarter in spelling and vocabulary. Spelling lists feature 20 words each and vocabulary has 10 words each. At this level, the focus is more on vocabulary with definitions, synonyms, antonyms, and fill-in-the-blank exercises. Spelling lists include commonly misspelled words and serve mostly as review. The poems are part of the Abeka English program and are placed in this series for convenience. Each level has between 8 and 10 poems of varying lengths. You could use just the student book and teacher key, or add the quiz book & quiz key if you like. Overall, the lessons are short and to the point and won't take loads of time for your busy student to complete. The words selected are challenging and often promote a Christian theme. Grades 1-3 have spelling and poetry. Grades 4-12 have spelling, vocabulary & poetry. Spelling Charts show the word lists from all 30 lessons. They are large format and two-sided. Colorful student books are part of the Abeka English program and each book is easy to teach. Even in grade 1, spelling words are shown in print and cursive, with a focus on word families and letter patterns. You will also find a good amount of reading lesson reinforcement in grade 1, as students have to discriminate between correct and incorrect usage of a word. The teacher guide includes tests, reduced student pages with answers filled in and loads of guidance for the teacher. It is a very uncomplicated way for a parent to teach spelling. Student books contain loads of writing practice to help youngsters become familiar with the spelling words too. Homework assignments are lists of words to copy and practice in order to improve spelling. Grade 1 does not have a teacher guide, but is very intuitive for the parent to use. Grade 1 has 30 lists, 10-15 words each. Grade 2 has 33 lists, 15-17 words each. Grade 3 has 34 lists, 17-20 words each. Poetry instruction is in the teacher guide for grades 2 & 3. Students learn to recite the poems and discuss their content. Each level has 7-8 poems.

In Spelling and Poetry 1, first graders will master the spelling of approximately 420 words. Most of the words are arranged phonetically, which teaches students to recognize basic spelling patterns. They will learn sight words, contractions, and abbreviations that they will encounter frequently in their reading and writing. First graders will also learn eight poems that will help them develop their oral speaking skills while deepening their appreciation for poetry.
