Description from

Category Description for Essential Math (Kindergarten)

It's hard to get more basic and solid than this program. The no-nonsense black and white worksheet format might deceive you, but fight it! They are engaging, with straight-forward teaching instructions (concept, introduction with manipulatives, how to use page) at the bottom of each. The scope and sequence is similar to Singapore's Earlybird Math and designed to prepare the student for Primary Math. It can be used as a supplement to Earlybird or as a stand-alone program. Many household items are used as manipulatives, but the few specific ones suggested are listed below (balance and pattern blocks are only referred to a very few times). ~ Janice

Straightforward and thorough
These books are all about the concepts. Simple work pages, logical progression, and enough repetition to be helpful without being tedious.

Great content
I am impressed with the style of learning in this book. There are suggestions for additional work at the bottom of each page that we didn't feel necessary, but good to have if you feel the need. Color graphics may be more inviting, but I also see the need to keep it lower cost and less distracting.

A great book, but depends on your child
I really like the program outlined in this book as well as the instructions printed on each page. I can see how it will give a child a very solid foundation. I have a child, however, who enjoys working independently. He sees the foundational activities (using number cards and counting cubes, or whatever you want to use a substitute) as "extra." He prefers to do a worksheet and be done. These little games are not laborious or time consuming, my little guy just doesn't want to do them. That may be because he had another kindergarten math book that was all worksheet and no activities. He loved it, and whizzed through it. I didn't think he was ready to go on to first grade math, though, so I started with Singapore book "B." I'm hoping that as we stick with this book, I can work more of the activities in, and that he will be okay with it. Otherwise, he might get frustrated as he progresses through the book without having mastered the various skills.

Excellent Kindergarten Math Program
Books A & B work well together to give you a complete year of math for your child in Kindergarten. I knew I wanted to use Singapore Math for 1st-8th grades so it made sense to start with these in Kindergarten. The lessons for each page are printed at the bottom of the worksheet if parents need help with teaching points. Two of my children have been through this set and both did well. I'd recommend to anyone looking for an inexpensive math program for Kindergarten.

Great preparation
We finished Count with Numbers but we're not ready for Singapore 1a. I decided to try this Kindergarten level but just the b book. It is just what we needed. I wish I knew about this book with my older child, it would have helped with our experience with Singapore. I am completely satisfied with this book and happy I chose this one without color. There are simple teaching instructions on the bottom of each page, no teacher book needed.

Great Value!
I love Singapore math and this Essential Math set (A and B) are very good for Kindergarten. They provide enough practice and ideas to keep your student engaged without being too overwhelming for the younger mathematicians.

When we selected our kindergarten A workbooks earlier this spring, Singapore recommended this series for homeschoolers. My 4 and 6 year old boys are enjoying their A workbooks very much and will be ready for more soon.

Primarily, the price. I didn't know what type of curriculum would work for my child, and didn't want to spend too much. I think that this was worth the cost, but I've decided to move to a spiral approach.

My four year old finished Essential Math Kindergarten A in two months and now, she is almost finishing book B. Singapore math is a little bit advanced than other math curriculum, but it's great for mathematically gifted children.

My 3 year old wants to do school this year, so I wanted a course that would actually teach him something but not push him too hard or be overly regimented. He already counts to 20, but has some number recognition to learn.
Mary H on Aug 12, 2016
I bought this over the Standards book because it was cheaper and my son loves to color. It kind of accomplished both in one book!

which Singapore math do you do after Essentials B?
