Description from

Category Description for Essential Math (Kindergarten)

It's hard to get more basic and solid than this program. The no-nonsense black and white worksheet format might deceive you, but fight it! They are engaging, with straight-forward teaching instructions (concept, introduction with manipulatives, how to use page) at the bottom of each. The scope and sequence is similar to Singapore's Earlybird Math and designed to prepare the student for Primary Math. It can be used as a supplement to Earlybird or as a stand-alone program. Many household items are used as manipulatives, but the few specific ones suggested are listed below (balance and pattern blocks are only referred to a very few times). ~ Janice

Simple to teach. Gives clues to teacher at bottom of each page. Easy to implement hands-on projects.

Such nice easy tear pages! But what I love most, is I can read the teachers instructions on the bottom of the page (three sentences) and be ready to present the daily concept adeptly immediately. We regularly used our kitchen cups as models for the early pages.

This is excellent extra practice for the Earlybird Kindergarten books.
My son isn't ready to be done with math pages when we finish the new concept in the Earlybird books- so this is perfect for extra practice!

So far we are enjoying this book. My daughter started it in preK. It's pretty basic but, since I'm schooling 2 this year, it's something she can figure out and do easily on her own. i will say that if you're child excels at math and has her numbers memorized this will be very easy. You may want to move to book B.

enjoying this program with my 5 and 6 year olds. My oldest is a hands on learner, so doing the work with the manipulatives is a must for her. I like how easy it is to use, and how it is mastery based. We just set a timer for 20 minutes and do as much or as little as we want. It's very flexible. Would definitely recommend!

Excellent Kindergarten Math Program
Books A & B work well together to give you a complete year of math for your child in Kindergarten. I knew I wanted to use Singapore Math for 1st-8th grades so it made sense to start with these in Kindergarten. The lessons for each page are printed at the bottom of the worksheet if parents need help with teaching points. Two of my children have been through this set and both did well. I'd recommend to anyone looking for an inexpensive math program for Kindergarten.

My four year old finished Essential Math Kindergarten A in two months and now, she is almost finishing book B. Singapore math is a little bit advanced than other math curriculum, but it's great for mathematically gifted children.

Always done Singapore Math with my older son so chose it for younger son as well. I like that's it's simple and not too time consuming or teacher-intensive for K.

We need a math curriculum for my child that is interested in math but not manipulatives. Manipulatives in this program are supposed to be optional, rather than critical.

I've heard there are different companies doing Singapore, how does this version compare? I've heard Singapore is more advanced than Saxon, but I've heard the wrong ones can be dumbed down or too much like Common Core.
A shopper on Nov 28, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Singapore Approach math is a faster paced program than is Saxon - at least in the early primary years. The two programs begin to catch up to each other in middle school.

Essential Math is a publication of which for many years has been the main supplier of Singapore Approach math programs in the US. This is an easy-to-use K book that provides black and white worksheets with teacher instructions for each in small print at the bottom of the sheet. A small collection of manipulatives are referenced. Essential Math A and B is an economical entry into the Singapore Approach math programs.

Earlybird Kindergarten Math Textbook A Standards Edition
BEST ANSWER: I did not. It's my understanding that they are 2 separate curriculums since the Early Bird book comes with the teachers manual. With the Essential books, everything you need to teach the concept is at the bottom of the page. We didn't hardly touch them and used them more as a supplementary item. I ended up using Abeka Math instead.
