Visually-appealing and a solid, conceptual program
The Singapore workbooks, while in black and white, are full of visually-appealing pictures. Singapore employs the concrete to pictorial to abstract approach, and these workbooks provide a wonderful bridge. With my very visual child, a workbook that looks dry and boring would work. But these really make the math practice look fun. There is a decent amount of coloring in the direction which also makes things more appealing.

these books served my son well and I like the approach they use to teach

We tried their new curriculum, Dimensions, along with the Primary. The Primary was much easier to follow and use, with just enough information covered in each exercise.

I wanted a conceptual math program for my mathematically gifted child.

We have been using Singapore Math for three years. This is my second round with Level 1 (my oldest is now on Level 3). I feel confident with this approach. The math is challenging but well explained. There is plenty of practice to master each lesson. Each concept is illustrated in several ways. My two boys work through math in different ways and it works for both of them.

Singapore Math provides a solid math foundation. I like the emphasis on learning mental math skills. We use it for Kindergarten through 3rd grade.

I read on various sites that this is a more rigorous math program for common core.

My calculus teaching friend who homeschools her children recommended this curriculum to me for mine. It's colorful, bright and teaches multiple learning styles.

This is the most highly recommended math program, and it is incredibly straight forward and easy to plan. The price is also great.

Singapore has worked well for all 4 of our children. My oldest is finishing the 2nd half of grade 6 this year, and is doing very well in Math.

When I first started homeschooling a friend directed me to this series. I like the standards edition best. The series is sort of ahead of our public school. Much of it reminds me of the way my 10th grade math teacher tried to open our minds to think in this way. I know a lot of people like Saxon and are always trying to get me to switch, but this math program makes sense to me.

What is the difference between the Singapore Math workbooks and textbooks (specifically looking at first grade)? We are on a very tight budget, so I'm wondering if we really need both. If not, which one is most necessary/helpful?

BEST ANSWER: This is our first year using Singapore. I have found that the textbook is most necessary; it introduces the lessons and gives a number of examples, often allowing you to try out the new concept.(ie problems with the answers left blank). The workbooks typically have one or two pages of corresponding practice work (remember that Singapore tends to be very graphic, so this translates to a very reasonable amount of work). If you are planning on purchasing the test book, you could use the problems in the test as practice problems (there are multiple tests for each unit in addition to comprehensive tests). If I had to rate them in order of necessity, I would recommend the textbook, then the tests, then the workbook. You could also consider purchasing a second hand copy of the text book or tests and a new version of the workbook. Also keep in mind that each set of books covers approximately one semester worth of work. For example, there is a 1A textbook, 1A workbook, and 1A tests (covering the first semester of first grade). For the second semester of first grade you would need the 2B textbook, 1B workbook, and 1B tests.
