Publisher's Description of Discovering New Worlds Text

This colorful anthology of stories, poems, inspirational quotes, and more, takes readers on a literary ride around the world and back and forth through time. Themes (such as a World of Adventure, a World of Family, and a World of Heroic Faith) are used as the "worlds" in which works by new and classic authors are presented; comprehension questions, extension activities, and vocabulary building (including literary terms) allow students to understand the selections in greater depth. Separate student exercises booklet, answer key, and test packet are also available for those who desire to get the maximum benefit from this text.

Teach reading skills using this God-honoring program filled with enriching and interesting reading material. Throughout this series, students read children- and history-oriented stories. Grade K emphasizes phonics instruction (2 books of single-syllable, short vowel, words; 2 books use multi-syllable words, long-vowel sounds). Grade 1 reinforces and applies these phonics skills. Grade 2 assumes students have a good grasp of phonics, so the series then shifts to progressively more challenging vocabulary and reading and emphasizes reading comprehension. Grade 3 stories span a broad history, including ancient and Bible. Grades 4-5 emphasize American history readings. Grade 6 highlights abridged and revised selections from classic authors. Some levels require Teachers' Manuals, student activities, and tests.

Do you remember the wonder of discovering literature? The realization that you could go places, see things, and experience other lives just by opening the cover of a book? Christian Liberty Press wants your young reader to join the ranks of those who have made that discovery, and they've made it easy and inexpensive to do so. This sixth-grade addition to their reading program provides a solid, multi-faceted reader, extension activity workbook, tests, and a just-the-answers teacher's manual - all for prices so low you will be tempted to assume the program isn't "up to snuff." But you would be so wrong! The 230 pg, paperback reader includes all sorts of genres - excerpts (fiction, biographies, autobiographies), short stories, poetry, quotes, and Bible stories - from all sorts of authors - classic, contemporary, Christian. Through eight "Discovering a World of... Adventure, Heroic Faith, Family, etc." units, the student is inspired and motivated to live a more purposeful Christian life. Each of the 45 selections includes a vocabulary segment, comprehension questions, and a suggestion for an extension activity (literary analysis, maps, timelines, and writing activities) along with a full-color illustration. Classic authors include Stevenson, Cervantes, Shakespeare, Benjamin Franklin, Alcott, and Isaac Watts. The Text is the non-consumable student reader. The Workbook is not reproducible and includes activity pages (often hands-on) for 25 of the extension activities. The Test Booklet is unusual in format (8.5 x 11 sheets folded sideways and stapled) and non reproducible. Tests (one for each unit) include vocabulary (matching) and comprehension (multiple choice and true false) questions. A complete answer key to the tests is included in the booklet. The Teacher's Manual is simply an answer key for the comprehension questions found at the end of each reading selection. (May I just say how much I love a publisher who keeps costs low by providing just what is needed - answers - rather than a whole lot of extra information that you feel guilty for not including?) ~ Janice
