We've used Saxon Math for years, beginning with Math K. Saxon can be tedious at times, but my kids know their math. The combination of solid review and slowly introducing new concepts is a model that has greatly worked for my kids.

We have tried several math curriculums, and Saxon fits both of my children far better than any other.
Carrie G on Jan 1, 2018
Saxon has clear easy lessons built right into the workbooks, without a bunch of illustrations that really have nothing to do with the material they are learning, as I have seen in other math books.

Saxon Math is the most comprehensive math program available. Our older kids have gone through all the Saxon levels and they have an excellent understanding of math concepts. I highly recommend Saxon Math.

We have always used Saxon Math books. I chose this particular item as it was time to update our Math 87 book to the newer 3rd edition.

Can you switch to it after Rod and Staff Math 6? or 7? or use it after R&S 8th?
A shopper on Feb 6, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Technically, Saxon Math 8/7 is a 7th grade course. Accordingly, you should be able to switch from R & S 6 into Math 8/7. However, we always encourage anyone coming into the Saxon math program from another math series to take the Saxon Middle Grades Placement Test.

Here is a link to the placement test:

Does this book provide answer keys?
A shopper on Apr 4, 2016
BEST ANSWER: No, the student book does not provide the answer keys. You would need to purchase the solutions manual for the answers. Also, you would need the tests and worksheets book to complete your set. Often, the 3 books (text, solutions, tests) are sold as a "homeschool kit."
Is this a workbook or a textbook? Would the student write in the book?
A shopper on Feb 29, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The student edition is the workbook they write in. It has the lesson included but none of the tests, worksheets (such as timed tests the lesson tells them to do), or the items they need for the investigations (every ten chapters, if I remember correctly). It's an awesome book! It works better with the entire homeschool set, but it is what you need more of if teaching more than one child.
