There is almost NO NEW MATERIAL in Saxon 8/7 as compared to 7/6. Before we purchased Saxon 8/7, my 6th grader used Saxon 7/6 for half of a year, and found it incredibly slow and boring. The needless repetition kills curious learning minds. We didn't even do any Mixed Practice but just focues on "Lesson Practice" which is supposed to be new material, but my son already knew 80-90% of the book contents from 4th grade level Math In Focus curriculum (I highly recommend this curriculum originating from Singapore). I went ahead and bought 8/7 thinking that maybe my son just needed to advance a year, in the Saxon content, but I was wrong. The Saxon material is severely below level and I found that 8/7 is almost a full repeat of content in 7/6 . It's possible the last 25% of the book has new material because I haven't gone through that yet page by page, but I already led my son through 75% of the book in 2 hours and he already knew the concepts either from Saxon 7/6 or from Math in Focus for 4th grade. If Americans use Saxon, the USA will remain behind other countries in producing future leaders in STEM areas.

Awesome math.
I use it for my almost 7th grader. It does a great review of reviewing past concepts while introducing new ones. It allows the kids to remember the math they have learned as they learn new concepts.

So very pleased! I've been homeschooling for 6 years now and Math has proven to be very difficult. I have 2 children in different grades and they learn very differently. But Saxxon Math has made all the stress and intimidation go away! My children are able to set down almost on their own and do the work. It's amazing! I will be returning to Rainbow Resource for our future curricula needs.

My child is 14 and need a review of the basic math. Which book will cover important concepts needed before Agebra I?
A shopper on Aug 31, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Math 87 starts with a complete review of all basic math concepts - addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, and percents. The first 80 lessons are mostly all review. Algebra concepts are introduced in the last 40 lessons.

It sounds as though Math 87 would be a good course for your child.
Do you need to purchase a teacher edition seperatly?
A shopper on Aug 28, 2017
BEST ANSWER: There is no Teacher Edition for the Saxon Math 8/7 3ED level. The level consists of only a Student Textbook, Solutions Manual, and Tests & Worksheets book. The student teaches himself by reading the daily lesson in the Student Textbook. Answers can be checked in Solutions Manual. Tests and timed drills are in the Tests & Worksheets book.
My son just finished 6/5 with no problems. I've been told the 7/6 has a lot of review. Is it too big of a jump to go from 6/5 to 8/7?
User on Aug 9, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I have used the Saxon Math homeschooling program for the last 16 years and I would never skip a book.
There is review on 7/6 as there is in all of them, but it won't be long before new concepts are introduced which will lead in to the 8/7 book.
Personally, I would be afraid my child may be lost beginning 8/7 without completing and mastering 7/6, which could result in frustration and then having to 'back track.' I know each child moves at a different pace, but I do not think you will be disappointed if you stay on course and move forward in Saxon order.
My son has just finished 6/5 and had no problems. I've been told that 7/6 has a lot of review. I don't want to buy a whole set if there is tons of review. Is going to 8/7 too big of a jump from 6/5? Is there a lot of review in 8/7 of 7/6?
A shopper on Aug 9, 2017
BEST ANSWER: All Saxon has a lot of review. The usual jump year is after 8/7 to Algebra 1. I would get 7/6, and give him tests at where you think he's at. When he makes enough errors, say, 3...then jump start him in the book there. If he finishes early, due to starting further on in the book, just have him start on the next book. Having done Saxon 1/2 after 8/7, I would just skip that and go straight to Algebra 1. Mine was good at Math, but made careless mistakes, so I made him do it for honing his computation accuracy. That's the one that has the most rehashing. It has the pre algebra review, but nothing they can't pick up in straight Algebra 1. All Saxons start out with the rehash...it's just the way it is. I like it for that. Summer kills their brain cells - in a therapeutic way...but often they need that refresher, just not always as much as the book begins with.
What year was this edition published?
User on Feb 17, 2016
BEST ANSWER: All three books in our kit have a 2005 copyright.
are there additional materials required for this math program?
A shopper on Dec 10, 2015
BEST ANSWER: No, but you can use less or more resources as you choose. The DIVE dvd's (sold separately from Saxon) are good resources if you want your child to watch a video of a professor teaching the new concepts (about 15 minutes per lesson) but they are not necessary. Using Saxon, in my opinion, can be tailored to the student, if they need repetitive, thorough progress to absorb math concepts, then do every problem at a steady pace. If they get bored easily this way, they need to move through the material more quickly or might benefit from supplemental math study. Saxon's strength is ALL the concepts needed, presented in the order that builds a strong foundation for the next math level. But it can be plodding and slow for the voracious math learner (IMHO)
Is this a paperback edition?
A shopper on Oct 17, 2015
BEST ANSWER: All of the pieces in the homeschool kit are softbound. We have found them to be durable. Check out the Saxon Teacher dvds for extra help. They show every problem in the book worked out on a whiteboard. ??

My child is 14 and need a review of the basic math. Which book will cover important concepts needed before Agebra I?
    A shopper on Aug 31, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Math 87 starts with a complete review of all basic math concepts - addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, and percents. The first 80 lessons are mostly all review. Algebra concepts are introduced in the last 40 lessons.

It sounds as though Math 87 would be a good course for your child.

Summer kills their brain cells - in a therapeutic way...but often they need that refresher, just not always as much as the book begins with.

are there additional materials required for this math program?

BEST ANSWER: All of the pieces in the homeschool kit are softbound. We have found them to be durable. Check out the Saxon Teacher dvds for extra help. They show every problem in the book worked out on a whiteboard. ??
