5.0 / 5.01 Review5 Stars4 Stars3 Stars2 Stars1 Star10000I do like Saxon Math 54 better than many of the other math books simply because it seems to encompass the learning abilities of a larger arena of children in the 4th or 5th grade It seems to be more of a midrange math book I have tried Abeka Horizons and other math books and I do miss the colorful pages Saxon tends to have only black and white everything I am glad that they are changing their cover I cannot yet tell whether that means that they are adding more color to the inside as well That would certainly be a welcome change With all the colors surrounding us in this world why would a child want to look at only a black and white page day after day? I am continuing to search for other math books and what they have to offer but Saxon seems to be one of the better ones thus far So unless I can find something better this is it for now Ed Note: The 2004 revisions of Saxon's middle school math (5/4 6/5 7/6 & 8/7) do include a highlighting color Was this review helpful? Do I need to buy the tests and worksheets? The older version does not come with worksheets.A shopper on Apr 10, 2018BEST ANSWER: I’d say it depends on the child. If your child benefits or needs the practice sheets, it is beneficial. However, I’m sure there’s an app or math game on the computer that would offer something similar. I’m not sure about the older edition, but in the current edition, there are occasionally sheets used to supplement a lesson. You could probably work around it, but honestly, it’s easier to have it preprinted for you. I’ve used older editions, and I believe the tests are in a different book, so you probably have the tests.
My opinion, you don’t need the tests/worksheet book. Is it helpful, yes. Is there some value to it, yes. Could your math year be fine without it, yes. Reply

The worksheets are mostly timed math practice and, unlike the textbook, are consumable (student works on the sheet). There is a test to be taken after every 5th lesson. There are some worksheets that assist with the new learning in given lessons (such as coordinate planes) but these are not the bulk of the book. There is also a reproducible page that is nicely formatted for doing the lessons. I find the timed math sheets to be very helpful in learning math facts. The answers to the timed math sheets and the tests are in the back of the answer book so if you were going to use this, you would want the corresponding answer book as well. Reply

The worksheets that are in this book are timed drill sheets and a couple of worksheets that go along with the investigations. I reorder just this consumable book to go along with the material that i kept from the complete set I purchased years ago. With this method, I only buy my oldest a complete math program and order just the worksheets for each kid thereafter. Reply

If you are interested in assessing the child's progress and knowing what concepts need additional practice, then the Saxon 5/4 workbook would be beneficial. Additionally, the included practice worksheets are given to the child to master the math facts. Reply
