Description

For some reason, it seems like it's generally harder to get boys interested in reading than girls. This book tries to help you solve that problem by listing and discussing nonfiction books that are likely to capture the attention of middle grade boys. With mention of over 1100 books in a variety of categories, you're sure to find something that will fascinate any boy. The book is divided into ten chapters based on types of books like American History, Animals, Science, All Things Gross, Creepy-Crawly Creatures, Disasters and Unsolved Mysteries, etc. There are three kinds of book listings in each chapter. First, several of the authors' favorites are shared in detail, with a description of each book including some interesting examples and quotes from the book. You really get a feel for the book and can see whether or not it would be something that would interest your reader. Next, there are annotated lists of a few dozen other books in that category that are popular with boys. There is a sentence or small paragraph describing each book so you get a brief insight to the book. Lastly, each chapter includes an additional long list of book titles that the authors have not reviewed but which have received praise from major library reviewing sources like School Library Journal or The Horn Book Guide. Throughout the book, there are black and white graphics showing the covers of some of the books. There really are a lot of great nonfiction reading materials out there for boys, and this book is a great aid in helping you find them. By Kathleen A. Baxter and Marcia Agness Kochel, 270 pgs, pb. ~Rachel
