We have a son who struggles with lying It's been an issue for a few years We have talked about it prayed about it read stories that teach against lying(like "The Boy Who Cried Wolf") and praised him when he tells the truth Sometimes he will go a long while on the right track and then start lying again In the book "Shiloh" the main character Marty tells a lie and it leads to many more lies As we saw Marty dig himself into a deeper and deeper hole with his lies I seized the opportunity to have some great conversations with my son Even though Marty was doing it for a good cause (to protect an abused dog) his relationships with others become broken and he can't really relax and be happy because of all the lies and secrets Marty is so relieved when his mother finally discovers his secret! The book gets pretty intense when the dog gets hurt and the rightful owner finds out and demands his dog back Everything ends well though Marty learns how damaging lies can be and how wonderfully freeing the truth is There is also a great contrast between Martys father who upholds the truth and the dog abuser who is a habitual liar The book makes it clear that lies are bad though this is shown through experiences rather than stated out-rightly This was helpful because it didn't become preachy and condemning to my son it just gave him a lot to think about I'm so glad to get my son thinking about lying on a deeper level! Though it is suggested for grades 3-5 as a read aloud it sure gave my first grader a lot to chew on
