makes life so much easier for mom
I found this course to be very helpful for my reluctant writer who now feels more confident about his writing. As a result, we have loaned out our dvds and continued with the Continuation Course.

My eighth-grade daughter (who loves writing) and my seventh-grade son (who hates to write) are both enjoying this writing course. They really like the instructor and find his lessons easy-to-follow. We are now halfway through the course and I have seen such an improvement in my kids' writing. I watch the video with them and then grade their work based on the writing techniques they have learned. I am very happy with this program and would highly recommend it (even for reluctant writers).

Great instruction!!
We did level A last year and while my daughter wasn't wild about it, her writing ability improved dramatically.

This program is superlative
My students are teenagers who have struggled with dyslexia. This program is so clear for the student. It makes success much easier and carries over to written work in other subjects.

Student Writing Intensive vs. Teaching Writing Structure and Style
My friend and I decided to work together to teach this writing course, which has been extensively and highly recommended throughout my 8 years as a homeschool mom. My friend purchased Teaching Writing Structure and Style (TWSS) and I purchased Student Writing Intensive (SWI) because we were confused as to which approach would work better for us. We like them both for different reasons and have chosen to use SWI for now. TWSS is a more principle based approach and puts a lot of work on the teacher. It's higher level in that you don't have article sources for your class nor a scope and sequence outside of general guidelines. We found it more confusing to follow since we have no prior experience with Mr. Pudewa's curriculum. His instructions in TWSS are primarily for the teacher. We think it will be very useful when our kids are older and we have all participated in this writing program for a couple of years. SWI is very much the same in its end goals and overall instruction, but it provides you with an additional classroom format in which Mr. Pudewa is teaching a group of students and you follow along watching the instruction on the DVD with your students. We only watch the DVD once or twice a month, spending the rest of the time writing. We watch the DVD when we're ready to move onto the next step. SWI allows flexibility and extra resources if you want to set the pace faster or slower, depending on the abilities of your students. The students we're teaching are ages 11-14, and because this is our first year the SWI program is extremely helpful. The downside of SWI is that it targets a general age level, so it won't grow indefinitely with the needs of our students. Mr. Pudewa has a great program, so both SWI and TWSS are excellent, but he as an individual is a great promoter of writing and very engaging. The kids benefit greatly from watching him teach. He has a great rapport and connects with children extremely well and provides excellent articles that grab the students' attention. This is why we are using SWI and not TWSS at this time.

I have been using Level C with my 9th grader, and like it so well I decided to use it with my 7th grader also, who is a reluctant writer.

My oldest son took an IEW class from local teacher last year, and although he doesn't like writing (struggles due to dyslexia) and didn't particularly enjoy the class, the course he took helped tremendously with his writing skills. We decided to try it on our own this year and continue with the Level B Writing Intensive. I am hoping he will enjoy the DVD's with Mr. Pudewa since the man is very charismatic in his teaching. I will also be starting my younger son on this program this year.

Does this include everything you need for this program. I have a 13 year old 8th grader and also does it give instruction on how to possibly pace out the year?
A shopper on Aug 20, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes, it includes everything you need for the program including a 30 week (5 days/week) Course schedule.
If I have this program from the 2000-2001 edition, can I buy the 2015 Student Writing Intensive workbook?
A shopper on Aug 12, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes, you certainly can but you may be disappointed in the amount of agreement between the older videos and the new workbook. There will definitely be quite a bit of overlap - the general units have not changed. However, there are some details that are different and you may find it annoying trying to reconcile the two.

Should I use the Teaching Writing Structure and Style before using the Student Writing Intensive?
User on Jun 8, 2018
BEST ANSWER: We had never used any IEW products before using the Student Writing Intensive. It was no problem for us at all. The Student Writing Intensive was so easy to use and even includes an overview of the material taught in the Teaching Structure and Style course.

We are now huge fans of IEW! We have since used their Fix It! Grammar program and will be buying The Elegant Essay for next year.

Best wishes to you and your family!
Does this include any grammer?
A shopper on Sep 13, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It does not include grammar exercises, but grammar terms are used and reinforced within the context of writing. For example, students will learn about various "Dress-ups" for their writing including: -ly adverbs, strong verbs, quality adjectives, etc. There are a few tips included about being able to identify these parts of speech but it's not the foci of the lessons. IEW has a grammar program called "Fix It! Grammar" that does a nice (though non-traditional) job of teaching grammar that complements the writing program.
Can Level B be used by a student who has not completed Level A? What level is recommended for an 8th grade boy who's not fond of writing, but has average ability?
A shopper on Jun 16, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I used Level B with my 6th and 7th grader even though they had not previously completed Level A, one of whom I would describe as having average or slightly below average writing skills. I would say that Level B would be a good fit for your 8th grader! The curriculum starts pretty simple and keeps adding skills, so it didn't feel as though we had missed anything (other than just learning how the curriculum works and getting used to it). My weaker writer really improved a lot with this curriculum!
does this specific set include the student material?
ELVIN P on May 13, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, it does. One set of student materials that are reproducible for family use are included with each SWI course.
does this specific set come with the student material?
A shopper on May 13, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes! this has the student dvd class and the writing assignments. We pause the DVD as needed to write outlines. Comes with some lists of quality words to add to writing, could add to the list of 'ly', adverbs and like words, but a great place to start. My 6th grade son, who is dysgraphic and did not enjoy writing is now doing amazing. He found the program to be a little slow at first but can now sit down and read and write paragraphs. We liked the program so much we are also doing the mid evil history along with it. This one came with a downloadable resource with word lists, grammar and punctuation, well worth the time to download and is referenced in the student guide. I tried it with my 4th grade girl but she was not ready. She is more interested in creative writing then structure still.
