I chose this book because it is the answer key for the Charlotte Mason based curriculum text with the same name.

I chose Language Lessons for High School Volume 2 because my 10th grader needs a gentle but thorough book for developing essay writing skills before beginning dual enrollment classes. According to Cathy Duffy, this volume of Language Lessons focuses on different types of essay writing.

Does this give thorough writing instruction for the essays or does it assume they already know how to format the different types of essays?

BEST ANSWER: Language Lessons for High School V2 gives a basic overview of each type of essay: comparison, contrast, descriptive, narrative, persuasive, and creative writing. After the basic overview of the particular type of essay, this book shows an example of that type of essay and encourages the student to analyze it. Then, it teaches brainstorming, outlining, and how to write introduction/body/conclusion. it is not as thorough or as step-by-step directed as Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) or Jump In Writing (Apologia); however, it does give basic instruction on the different types of essays and how to compose them. It seems to work well for review and writing practice for my sophomore who used IEW earlier this year. It could stand alone for a student who is a natural writer or who has had some previous instruction. Language Lessons for High School V2 also includes a great deal of dictation/editing exercises; the parent reads a paragraph aloud, while the student writes the information in a notebook. Afterwards, the student uses the textbook to go back and make corrections to his/her dictation writing. Dictation is an effective way to teach correct writing/grammar/spelling. All in all, this program teaches writing skills in a natural (and usually painless) way, but it can be frustrating for students who want more step-by-step instructions.
