Description

Parents have quite the road to negotiate these days. Deciding to embrace homeschooling comes with plenty of decisions. Now, consider our world and what children have had forced upon them. This book asks some big questions of parents. The author is a homeschooling Mom, and she is black. Her family’s journey was going one way until her oldest daughter started noticing she was the only black student in her ballet class, or on a group outing with other homeschoolers. The parents realized in their efforts to include their children with others, they were not addressing the family’s own history. It just wasn’t a thing, until it was. I loved how the book is organized by presenting a big question and then responding. I loved her tone. It is observant and insightful and I wanted to really think about my own family’s experience. I wanted a do-over in some areas! If only I could go back and do this or that differently… and better. The world is a complicated place, and as our children negotiate what they know at home and outside they ask big questions. Be ready. You might even decide to initiate the big talks over a cozy fire. What a wonderful book for parents. Thank you, Amber O’Neal Johnston! ~Sara
