Great intro to Chemistry
Loved this book as an intro to Chemistry for my, then, 8th grader. The author wrote so that chemistry was easy to understand. We loved the history he added as well.

Great mix of history, chemistry, and geography.
I am adding it to my third grader's chemistry lessons. Very good.

We used this book with our children (ages 9-15) as an introduction to chemistry We had used Exploring the History of Medicine the previous year and found Tiner's style to be engaging This book was so interesting I sat down one night and read through the entire text I highly recommend this book for junior high and high school students It is not extensive enough to serve as a stand-alone chemistry text for a highschool year but it is a great introduction John Hudson Tiner presents the material in small vignettes not really in "textbook" format but in short stories that you will never forget Students gain a grasp for the fundamentals of chemistry in the world all around them Each chapter contains multiple choice questions which can be used as quiz material Answers are in the backThis is a book students can work through alone together or with parental guidance They will enjoy it

I wanted a book that was not experiments but some coherent narrative of the subject.

We've used two other of the Tiner science books and have enjoyed them. They are a good balance between superficial and detailed in that there is enough specific information to satisfy those with greater interest in the sciences but not so much that those less scientific minded students feel bogged down or overwhelmed. The material includes examples that convey meaning well.

Don't like the curriculum my son is currently using.

We wanted a living book about Chemistry to read aloud and do narrations. Taken in bitesized chunks of about 2pp/day, this is very digestible for a 5th grader who loves Chemistry.

is there a test book and teachers test key to the exploring chemistry?

BEST ANSWER: This is a wonderful book to introduce chemistry but is not a true chemistry course. It does have questions at the end of each chapter and answers in the back of the book. I'd say it's a 7th grade level introduction. Gives history, biographies and some basic concepts of chemistry. Master books has a website too.
