We like Developmental Math

We switched from Saxon several years ago and are still using DM. This is my third time using the level 8 book and it works great. You do need to supplement by practicing math facts for memorization outside of what the workbook offers. I like that each workbook focuses on one concept at a time and each student can work as fast or slow as she is able to.

I use this, along with Math Mammoth multiplication 1, to get down the multiplication facts. Middle school mathematics goes sooo much easier for everyone. Most math books introduce multiplication in their 2nd grade book and jump into multiplying 2-3 digit numbers in 3rd grade, but don’t give enough practice in the multiplication tables before doing so.

"I have 1 student who finds Saxon too overwhelming (although my other students do well with it). No recommendation from anyone just seems like it might work."

Have used this before. Learning the multiplication tables is essential to improving the efficiency to which a child can do higher arithmetic and high school math. I begin with the introduction to multiplication in our math books, add this for more conceptual understanding and drill. Finally, I use a third product to really memorize the tables. By that time, many facts have already been learned.
