Ages 4 and 5, my girls are loving the Story of the World. We don't use all the activity pages included, but we like the map activities and I LOVE the research that has gone into this project. The best part of the Activity book is actually the wealth of additional recommended resources that can be referenced if your kids want to further explore a subject.

My boys love this!
I would recommend this product. It states that all pages are reproducible for family needs, so if you have a copier you'll find it handy. The coloring pages gives them something to keep their bodies busy and focused so they can listen to the story. Having their own set of markers, crayons, gel pens, etc. has been helpful in staying focused and minimizing side discussions (fights). I love that the maps require marking on them and my boys seem to have a good grasp on the geography because of it. Some of the activities are fun ideas with minimal to no planning. My boys loved the archeology dig in the sandbox. Other activities, like mummifying a chicken... we skipped that one. I used this with five of my boys, ages 13-4. We are now purchasing the activity book for the Middle Ages and continuing our journey. The only thing I wish we had done was to make a timeline on blank paper on our wall of all these stories as we read them.

There are a variety of additional projects, from art to crafts to cooking, as well as many, many books that you can find on your own to enhance the learning. My experience was that most of the additional books were not at my library, even though I live in a large metropolitan area with a great system. However, the descriptions did help me search for comparable books on the subject. We enjoyed most of the projects that we did, and there will certainly be far more options than you can feasibly do in a single school year, giving you variety in the type of projects you choose for each chapter. Definitely worth the purchase, though it does feel wasteful that at least 25% of our student sheets went untouched.

Perfect for young ones!
I could not be happier with this activity book. My kids, 2nd grade & Kindergarten, both love the activities in this book. What I love, is that I can do one activity a day for the five day school week and that gets us through one chapter a week. But the best part is that the activities are so hands on and fun, that it really reinforces the content from the chapter and the kids are remembering it!!!!

Great history curriculum
Our kids love Story of the World. We finally bought the text after listening to the audio CDs on multiple road trips, etc. We use the activity guide for history group activities, within copyright parameters. I love that the focus is on the who, where and why of historical events without hammering in specific dates. Stories stick with us. Dates can be referenced if needed, or put on a home timeline.

BEST ANSWER: Susan Wise Bauer has written an upper level (grades 7-12) book for the same time period - History of the Ancient World - http://www.rainbowresource.com/proddtl.php?id=041239

There is a companion study guide to this book - http://www.rainbowresource.com/proddtl.php?id=012354&subject=History%2FGeography/14&category=History+of+the+Ancient+World/10483

These are definitely sufficient and suitable for a high school Ancient World History course.

There are similar books for other time periods: Medieval World - http://www.rainbowresource.com/proddtl.php?id=018010Medieval World Study Guide - http://www.rainbowresource.com/proddtl.php?id=059917Renaissance World - http://www.rainbowresource.com/proddtl.php?id=008616
I'd like to get the SOTW books to read with all my children (ages 8,7, 4 and 3). Of course the older kids will understand it better than the younger ones, but I'm okay with that. My question is, will one activity book suffice for the family, or would we need one activity book for each child involved?

BEST ANSWER: Our family uses one activity book for our 3 kids (ages 6, 7 & 9) and our friend's two children (ages 4 & 7). The one book serves us just fine for ideas and crafts, etc without violating copyright laws, etc. I don't think more than one book is necessary for one home educating family. If using the pages for personal use in one family it's permissible to use a copier to xerox maps, coloring pages, etc. We love Story of the World! I also really recommend the audio CDs. It's easy to pop those in when we're driving around and then the understanding and application is pretty effortless afterwards. And Jim Weiss is the narrator and he is a wonderful reader.
What is the difference between the revised edition and the older edition? I have the older one and would like to know if I really need to upgrade. Thanks for your time.

BEST ANSWER: Hello,
I am using the Story of the World series to teach Ancient History at a homeschool co-op. Some of my students have the original and some have the revised books. Since some of the families had already owned the book, I have tried to make adjustments when needed so that the families did not have to buy a new edition. So far, most of the content is the same with an infrequent difference in a map between the editions. I don't see it necessary to upgrade. Have a great night.
