Daughter loves Zoology!
My daughter has never been so engaged in one subject like she is with Zoology. We love everything about Apologia. We have finished Earth Science and Physical Science as well.

Knowing and growing
Thanx for the quick arrival of these tools to learn and teach this year and in the years to come. So far so good, we are in the first lessons and are provoked to much discussion.

I was really looking forward to working through Zoology 1 with my 8 and 10 year old children Our actual experience with it is mixed The material is interesting but we ran into problems trying to use it during the winter We started in September and couldn't do many of the experiments once the weather changed to snow and bitter cold We skipped ahead to the sections on pterosaurs and bats and plan to complete the experiments for the insects and bird nests as the weather warms up Ideally I should have switched to something else (perhaps the astronomy) then switched back to this in the Spring Also we didn't really care for the content of the junior notebooking journal- it was mainly busywork

I thought I might be able to help others by writing a review that is not a glowing reviewso perhaps you can see why this may not work for you if you are like us Zoology 3 happens to be one of the things I remember the least fondly in 7 years of homeschooling I felt that the book was unnecessarily wordy and long-winded History and Literature are my favorite subjects to teach so I thought a conversational Science text would be nice That was not the case My children and I all began the course with gusto However only 3 months into the year we were all forcing ourselves to get through it My students found the notebook to be 75% busy-work: making little pocket books and flip books and such Each section started out interesting but just went downhill as it seemed to us to be beaten like a "dead horse" as the saying goes We have enjoyed hundreds of BBC nature and Science videos We watch Science videos on Netflix and YouTube for fun We loved several Science biographies and we have also enjoyed Abeka and A Closer Look Science but Apologia Elementary did not work for us

My boys were 11 & 7 and we used this curriculum as a supplement to another curriculum we were doing They loved it so much that we are going to complete it this year and use it by itself I also purchased the journal along with it and they loved to go outside and do the things in it draw pictures paste things in journal They said "this isn't school work - this is fun"

I am so NOT a science person Through my years of homeschool my family has started countless science books only to have them fizzle out after a few weeks Lots of times this is due to the fact that those other books are designed for class room use The lessons are cumbersome and many times require materials that I have no clue how to findApologia is not like this at all This is one science curriculum that is specifically designed for homeschoolers The text is written directly to the reader including many interesting descriptions and clear presentations of the subject matter My third grader this year is using the Zoology 1 book about flying creatures Since the text is written on a fourth or fifth grade reading level I do have to read the text to her but she has no trouble following me and understanding what I am reading to her She really is enjoying this book So far we have learned so much about birds but later we will be learning about bats flying reptiles and insects Each chapter includes hands on activities to help your child really understand what has been presented in the text One thing that I really appreciate about Apologia is that the activities don't use hard to find objects Most of the time the items needed can be found lying around the house or purchased inexpensively at the store There are 16 chapters in our book One could finish a chapter a week and do two books per year but I estimate that one would have to do 45-60 minutes of science per day to read all the text do the notebooking projects and any experiments I will probably cover the book over the course of one year While the books seem a bit costlier than some others I think the value for the price is terrific The text books are hardbound designed to hold up through several children The corresponding notebook adds puzzles and journaling activities to the text While I am sure that one could come up with these activities on one's own I need something all set up for me or I will never get around to printing out the pages I need so I definitely think the notebook is worth the money Also experiment log pages are included in the notebook and some full color paper projects are in the back of the bookI definitely think we will be returning to Apologia for our science needs in the future

Our whole family loves the Apologia Science books! They are so easy to use very little teacher prep the text is written like the author is right there speaking to us The lessons are packed with fun information colorful pictures and drawings to illustrate the concepts Lab/experiment supplies are conveniently listed for each Lesson which makes assessing the "need to gets" and "already haves" quick and easy The elementary level books do not have unit tests so for my kids that like to test we review the narrative questions(answers are in the back of the book)and play games with the vocabulary words from the unit The activities are fun and engaging for all ages my children have beautiful journals and scrapbooks from every book we have completed to show off to grandparents when they visit Skeptical grandparents (one is retired from public education) have been very impressed with the hands on learning and the in depth understanding my children have gained from these books We love Apologia Science!

We have struggled for a long time with what to use for science and have tried a number of things I love science and wanted my children to love it too Instead they hated it and didn't ever want to do anything I suggested Finally I pulled this book off the shelf that had been sitting there for over a year and tried it AT LAST- my children liked it- we all liked the narration and notebooking style of learning The reading is personable and easy to listen to It has real-life and practical learning activities I think they enjoy learning in-depth about something instead of grazing over the top of a large number of general subjects It piques their interest and satisfies their desire to know something about something I am finally excited about elementary science and just wish there were more years to do all the books!

I did Zoology 1 with our 7 year old this last year and he really enjoyed it He often can remember the facts we cover better than I do If my husband is nearby when we are doing science he joins us as he finds these books so interesting Yet the language and format are simple enough for young children to enjoy also Even my 3 year old loves to sit down and leaf through the book just to see all the wonderful pictures She asks many questions about the photos I know she is learning too I only had one child formally using Zoology 1 but my children ages 3 and 5 enjoyed being involved with the projects I love the fact that the projects are simple and the supplies are inexpensive (often they are items we already have) This curriculum has really given my son a good foundation in science as well as a desire to continue to learn more My sons will be 8 and 6 soon and I am looking forward to using Zoology 2 with both of them next year

We used Exploring Creation with Zoology 1 this past year with our 9 and 11 year old girls They loved it and so did I The experiments were easy to do and supplies were easy to find We especially loved the notebook approach both girls have created wonderful notebooks they can share with the family There is tons of information and it is presented in a format that easy for the girls to understand and enjoy We look forward to Astronomy this next year

School Requirement :)

We are planning to have our 3 younger boys do the class, but we only had one of these books, so we needed another. This is the best elementary science we have found. Our 4 older children did the class, and they basically became expert entomologists.

We have completed their astronomy and botany books, and this is the next in the series. This year, we've added a small flock of chickens, 2 pollinator gardens, and 2 colonies (hives) of honeybees to our yard...we're excited to explore the creatures in our own backyard, with this year's science theme!

I have been using Exploring Creation science books for years and have never been disappointed. We do not have this particular science book, I know my kids will love it.
joan b on Mar 24, 2016
My son loves animals, and we strongly believe in creation. I wanted a curriculum that does not teach a theory that is in direct opposition to our beliefs but gives him a strong foundation in science. The sample lesson that I was able to look at on Rainbow Resource Center's website really sold me on this.

How much does a book like zoology 1 weigh?
User on Sep 1, 2016
I really like these courses but was wondering if it mattered if they were not completed in order. I think my children would like #3 the best. Would it make any difference if we did that one first?

BEST ANSWER: The publisher encourages starting the Zoology sequence with Exploring Creation with Zoology 1. However, it is possible to start with Zoology 3 if you take the time to complete Module 1 of Zoology 1 first. That Module is available as a download from our website - "download a sample" button under the add to cart/add to wishlist box. - http://www.rainbowresource.com/proddtl.php?id=010470
