Great resource and something we will keep for years!
I was surprised at how large and detailed this book was! At first glance I wondered how in-depth you could get with a 2-page spread, but this book provides a lot of good and relevant details and the links are really very enjoyable. I pre-read a few sections before we started school, and sent Usborne a notice about the two dead links I found and they responded almost immediately, providing new links for those sections. We spent almost an entire day exploring the activities and looking at the photos and videos linked to the first section in our curriculum.

This edition uses heavy pages and a nice binding that lays flat when you're looking at it. It seems very well-constructed and since the associated links are for multiple ages, this book will stay in our library for probably the next 8-10 years. I'm very pleased with this, and we're using it with Story of the World for our history spine. Even the adults in our family enjoy reading it.

The edition pictured is I believe the most recent edition, hardback, with full size printing. (I'm told there is another softback edition with reduced print size, but the cover is different.)

I would definitely recommend this book to any family who would like a general history text to browse or work from, and please don't forget the links, which seem carefully selected and age-appropriate for school children (although I had a lot of fun exploring the different museum photos.) Usborne provides a "contact us" page you can use to report dead links, and they are very quick to update the entire section containing one dead link. They put a lot of work into this book and the related links, and it shows. 5 stars, easily. I'd add an extra star for the superior page weight and the binding.

Great for Active Kids!
I use this for homeschooling my 2 boys, ages 7 and 5. I try not to give them too much table-work, as their attention spans for worksheets are limited. We love this book! My son takes it to bed with him and reads it for fun! They enjoy looking up the websites after we read the corresponding material from History of the World, Vol. 1. It is a great and engaging resource that brings history to life. Highly recommend!

My second grader will sit with this book for extended periods of time reading and looking at the illustrations Often when we get to a subject in history or come across a historical reference in our other reading he will run to the encyclopedia and open to the pages that coincide with what we are reading! He catches many historical references in everyday life because he is so familiar with this encyclopedia Our copy is worn When this one is too worn out to be useful I will buy another one

The Usborne Internet-Linked Encyclopedia of World History is a chronological summary of world history from prehistoric time to about the year 2000 It is divided into four periods: prehistoric world ancient world medieval world and the last 500 years It is richly illustrated with photos paintings and drawings adorning every page It is fairly comprehensive but one should note that because of this and the wealth of illustrations it is rather concise Major events and people are given what amounts to a blurb and an illustration It is an excellent resource to just sit and explore history or to look up historical facts The layout of the book is very inviting: each page has a time span and major subdivision heading in the upper left hand corner a timeline runs along the bottom of each page showing the placement of those pages events along its length and the bottom right of the page has a box with important dates What makes this book more exciting is the internet links for each section To use these one goes to the website for this book and types in the page number all of the links are listed all one has to do is click (which also means that the links are up to date) You can also download illustrations from the book a resource we have found immensely useful for adding to our timeline and other projects This book is an excellent resource to page through look-up quick summaries or to use as a springboard for further investigation (For anyone using The Story of the World activity books each chapter in Story of the World lists which pages in this encyclopedia correspond to the lesson)
