Description

Beginning readers will appreciate this dictionary written just for them! This reference contains over 2000 age-appropriate vocabulary words. The book begins with an introductory section that teaches kids how to use the dictionary. Then it proceeds to the entries. The print size is large and easy to read, with about 8-10 entries per page. Guidewords appear at the top of each page, and entry words are in purple so they're easy to find. The definitions are complete sentences (ie. "A shed is a small building used to store things."), and sample sentences show how words are used in context. Full color captioned photos enhance the text and hold kids' interest. Some entries have feature notes which show sound-alikes, opposites, rhyming words, or related words. Different meanings of the same word are clearly distinguished, and irregular verb forms and noun plurals are listed at the end of each entry (when applicable). The bottom of each page has an alphabet border to reinforce "ABC order" skills. An appendix provides brief reviews of phonics and spelling concepts, plus commonly used word lists. 291 pgs, sc. ~ Lisa
