Reading Connection

These nearly 100-page reading workbooks feature an array of different activities, developing an equally diverse array of reading skills. Each lesson features a reading passage on the right-hand page, which is accompanied by a series of questions on the back side of the page (no easy peeking!). The selections are a mix of fiction and non-fiction including biography, science articles, stories, legends, poetry and much more. A good mix of authors are introduced as well in some books, with adaptations of well-known classics used as well. The questions following each passage require kids to use sequencing, interpretation, reading comprehension, finding the main idea, vocabulary, summarization, grammar, and even research and study skills. A wide variety of language skills are also practiced throughout each book, including synonyms/antonyms, prefixes and suffixes, syllabification, contractions, compound words, rhyming, and more, although skills practiced will vary by grade level. The selection of questions may include true/false, multiple choice, short answer, matching, word searches and more. Additional activities requiring the student to draw from their own experiences relating to the story are also included, and are more open-ended or creative in scope. An answer key is included at the back of each book. - Jess
