Elsie Dinsmore Books
This series tells the fictional story of Elsie Dinsmore, a young lady coming of age in the late 1800's. The books were bestsellers in their time, and have garnered quite a following in our time as well. In the series, Elsie grows from the tender age of eight to womanhood, all the while presenting a wonderful role model for young girls to follow. Her faith and obedience to God are consistently portrayed, as are the Christian values of patience, long-suffering, love, and diligence. Although my girls say Elsie is "too perfect," exposure to such an ideal is character-building. We are, after all, to "Be imitators of God," and look to Jesus as our example. Although we can never attain that ideal, it gives us a goal to work toward. Similarly, the character of Elsie supplies a standard of behavior for girls and young ladies intended to inspire and help build character in them. Pb.
