Military History of the World

Wow! I thought as I hefted this tome. A book that was made just for me! I was fascinated as I pored over the military campaigns that have shaped the world's history. At first I thought that it would just be about the battles, but the book gives background information about why wars were fought, and what the outcome was. Volume I covers the time period from the ancient Egyptians to the Spanish and Muslim wars in Spain in 1571 in over 600 pages. Volume II continues to examine the period between the defeat of the Spanish Armada to the Battle of Waterloo. I found the details on Joan of Arc's campaigns, on Hundred Year War battles, and on Roman and Frankish conflicts to be very interesting, especially since several of these world-changing wars are not often remembered. What really interested me is that the author doesn't just give you a detailed account of the war: like a good novel, the story develops. Good for flipping through, glancing at the maps, or for history/warfare buffs. By J.F.C. Fuller, pb. ~ Mark
