Close Reading w/ Text-Dependent Questions

Truly effective reading comprehension develops as students actually interact with the text. Text-Dependent Questions (TDQs) develop crucial skills and engage with multi-genre, high-interest, and complex reading material. It is hard to overvalue the skill of literary analysis, since we read to learn! For each passage, students use higher level thinking skills to extract and apply content. The workbook’s first section, built of 20, 4-page units, directs students to read a text, then complete tasks such as summarizing, annotating, and defining words. Then, complete TDQs to gather information. Lastly, readers respond to and analyze the author’s writing. Units end with a “Learn More” prompt: an online extension activity. The second section provides 2 units with longer reading passages and small group activities (easily assigned to a single student).
