These fraction manipulatives are a great hands-on tool to teach and practice fractions. The flat bars (strips) are made of colorful, flexible plastic and each row is 6 in length when combined into a whole. There are 49 pieces in the set representing halves, thirds, fourths, fifths, sixths, tenths, and twelfths, and each fraction group is a unique color. Place each group on the corresponding marked strip. A sheet of sample teaching ideas is included with the bars, so if you want to use them without guides it can be done. Basic concepts, equality, inequality, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division ideas are offered.
If you want instruction that is geared toward grade-level activities, Teacher Guides are available. Grade 1-2 has 17 lessons in basic concepts, readiness for equality and inequality, story problems, fractions for collections, building a number line, and measuring length. Grade 3-4 has 24 lessons and covers fractions and fraction names, equality, fraction families, common denominators, inequalities, word problems, number lines and mixed numbers, measuring length and rounding, fractions/decimals/percents, addition, subtraction, and probability and predictions. Grade 5-8 is formatted a bit differently. There are 8 sections and 5 steps then break down each section: each building on the previous. This book covers basic concepts, equality, inequality, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and fractions/decimals/percents. Each teacher guide includes masters to be used along with some of the activities. The lessons are easy to implement and include the purpose of each lesson, along with the materials needed (Fraction Bars, copied masters), and instruction for the concept and accompanying activities. There is even a section for independent practice and assessment.
