Description

Ruth Mendenberg is facing the aftermath of World War II and the Holocaust without her family and as an oppressed race. As she finds her way back to her Uncle Moishe's house, the last place she and her family lived, Ruth meets the maid. She is wearing Ruth's mother's dress and insensitively breaks the news that she has seen no one in Ruth's family. Ruth realizes that she has nobody and she is without a home, so she goes to the city hall to try to find out if anyone in her family has registered. Again, there is no trace of any relatives. Ruth has now become hopeless and grown callous because of all of the tragedy she has endured. Her only hope now is a stranger, Saul, who finds her as she is leaving the city hall. Saul has been checking constantly with the Jewish Agency to see who registers and to find others in any way he can. He brings Ruth to a house for refugees and says that he needs her in Palestine to help build a Jewish homeland. Ruth agrees, because she has nothing else to do, but also because the task involves helping twenty orphan children that need to be helped from over the border into Czechoslovakia to Austria. Ruth embarks on a journey where she faces many challenges and meets new people. Can the new people she meets nudge her to open up again - to feel, to cry? Will she ever find any of her family? Will she make it to safety and to freedom, where she will no longer feel outcast and discriminated against?
