Description

This resource is different from other middle school writing and grammar programs! It is an interactive program that is both purposeful AND fun. This level is recommended for Grades 6-8. Students review the grammar stories, illustrations, and songs previously learned, though anyone can jump in here without having done any prior levels. Songs such as “Awful Words” bring some laughs while also reminding learners to avoid overused words. Classic literature and scripture are incorporated throughout the grammar and writing material, always pointing students toward a worldview of beauty and truth.

Each lesson in this consumable Student Worktext takes 1-2 hours but may also be broken up and spread over 2-3 days. Finishing one lesson per week is the goal, making it perfect for a weekly co-op setting. Every lesson includes some type of writing activity including pre-writing, writing, or re-writing assignments working on creative narratives, 3 single paragraphs, and even a literary analysis. Students learn the structure and style of writing, MLA format, and how to analyze their own assignments while moving through 3 progressive levels of editing to become a “Knight of the Write Table” while avoiding the “Knights of the Wrong Table”. Grammar instruction covers concepts such as gerunds, infinitives, and participles as well as syntax, prepositional phrases, and more.

The 30 lessons take about 1 school year to complete with sessions 2-3 days/week, though a more advanced student could work through the material much faster. Material is designed for students to work independently (with occasional parent/teacher discussion) encouraging them to read compositions aloud to the teacher and/or other students to gain confidence and feedback for editing. Semester reviews at the middle and end of the program could be used as tests. Most instruction for the course is built into the student text, but the Answer Key and teaching tips for this level are found in the separate Teacher E-book, which mirrors the student text. This package includes both items needed to teach the course the printed Student Text and a code to receive the Teacher E-book by email. 454 pgs., 3-hole punched, looseleaf.

Publisher's Description of Grammar Castle and the Kingdom of Writing Middle School Level - Student Edition and Teacher E-book
Discover the Kingdom of Writing through adventures in Grammar Castle. Using a metaphorical kingdom, this interactive grammar program helps students to get a grasp on grammar while learning to write well. Why not learn grammar in a fun way! Each part of speech is a character living in the Kingdom of Writing, so it is easy for students to remember them and their functions. Review the 8 parts of the speech, and meet the good knights who will lead you from being a peasant of Writing to becoming a page, then a squire, and ultimately a Knight of the Write Table with Sir Sentence, Sir Punctuation, Sir Usage, and Sir Rhythm. However, beware of the enemy, the Knights of the Wrong Table: Sir Run-ons-a-lot, Sir Wrong Words, Sir Mismark, and Sir Fragment. The bad knights live in Fools' Forest, where you will begin your journey to knighthood. (454 pages).
The Book of Esther, A Christmas Carol, Peter Pan, and scripture about Jesus are all included in the text. Your student will complete 1 essay, 4 paragraphs, and 1 creative story in the text.
The printed version of the Middle School Textbook is shrink-wrapped so that you can put the text in a 3-ring notebook. See the mirrored Teacher Edition with answers and tips for teaching! The Middle School Grade Student Edition (Printed) and Teacher Edition (E-book only) are sold together.

Category Description for Grammar Castle / Kingdom Writing

Grammar Castle & the Kingdom of Writing is a classically minded grammar and writing program for Grades K-8, emphasizing Christian character values throughout. Full-color Student Workbooks are engaging and interactive… filled with stories, illustrations, metaphors, and songs that bring grammar and writing to life. As students move up through the curriculum levels, a strong foundation is laid in grammar, usage, and mechanics, as well as step-by-step writing and oral presentation skills. Those familiar with classical methodology won’t be surprised at how well students can memorize and assimilate the important information using creative memory devices (color coding, pictures, mnemonics, jingles, etc.), helping it to stick in the brain--- long term! For example, each part of speech is represented by an engaging character living in Kingdom of Writing… their color, symbols, characteristics, and songs help students to make connections, remembering the functions of each part of speech.

The curriculum’s writing process, influenced by the Canons of Rhetoric (invention, arrangement, style, memory, delivery), focuses on brainstorming, paragraph arrangement, essay format, memorable style, editing, and delivery. Tasks are broken down into small steps and practiced over several lessons, helping students not to feel overwhelmed. Models from scripture are used to teach composition and speaking skills and the use of authentic literature is also integrated into writing and grammar instruction… perfect for those who enjoy a Charlotte Mason approach.

With the goal of one lesson per week, each curriculum level is easily finished in a school year. Teacher guided lessons take 30 min to 1 hour in the elementary levels and 1-2 hours at the middle school level, and can be done once a week (perfect for a co-op setting) or spread over 2-3 days during the week. Each level has a consumable Student Workbook which follows a particular lesson pattern, making it easy to teach and easy for students to get into a rhythm of learning. Teacher and student share the same book up through 3rd grade (answer key in back), but in 4th grade and up… a teacher e-book mirrors the student book with answers overlaid. The optional Story & Songbook (013934) and Coloring Book (013940) can be purchased separately for extra support but aren’t necessary to the success of the program.
