Originally written as a one-semester study, this textbook takes a look at the beliefs of evolutionists and creationists side-by-side. Shelby MacFarlane presents the information in a systematic, easy-to-read format. Chapters one through three offer the evolutionist perspective, citing those who contributed to the evolutionary theory and the timeline of its beliefs. Chapters four through ten focus on the creationist perspective, citing scientific evidence against evolution (missing fossil links, fraudulent embryonic drawings of Haeckel and more) as well as the dating methods used today.
Each chapter is broken into sections, and each section wraps up with discussion sections. Throughout the sections are illustrations and photos to enhance the content, and new terminology and vocabulary are in bold. A glossary at the back of the book offers the definitions of those terms and words. I think what really sets this book apart from some of the others is the readability. Because it is divided into shorter sections with discussion topics, the reader isn't overwhelmed with a sea of words that they feel they will never get through. The sections of this book can be read in shorter time periods; therefore, it can fit into an already busy schedule.
If you want to use it as a one-semester curriculum at the high school level, there is a resource CD available for purchase. This resource includes pdf.files of tests, vocabulary review, chapter review, concept maps, and a final exam. Students need to hear this before going off to college, where they will hear only one side of the argument. ~ Donna
