Great poets and writers have something in common. They love to play and experiment with words, rearranging words and parts of words until they find something they like. This collection of reproducible activities invites students to do the same thing as they learn important English concepts, and develop a lifelong love of words and creative writing. Over 50 worksheet activities are included, featuring English topics such as: parts of speech, clauses, sentence types, similes and metaphors, alliteration, oxymorons, hyperbole, spoonerisms, puns, names, limericks, paraphrasing, synonyms and antonyms. Each activity introduces the concept or skill, then challenges the student to use their creativity to complete a related activity. For example, in the lesson on imperative sentences, students write an imperative sentence they would use in a number of different situations like "Someone, without realizing it, is standing on your foot". In the lesson on personification, students decide what attributes different cars and trucks might have, and what they would sound like if they talked. An "answer key" with possible answers and a list of extension activities are included. There’s way too much variety to even think about listing, but in all, this is much different than the standard language arts fare! Whether your child enjoys creative writing, or can’t come up with a better synonym for ’happy,’ I would bet that they’d find these activities both fun and helpful in building creative writing skills. The breadth of writing and grammar topics covered make this a fun supplement to any English or language arts program. - Jess
