Tips for Learning World Languages at Home
This booklet by Chris Roe shares tips for teaching a foreign (or world) language to students in elementary to high school, as well as some tips for adults, too. The book shares one family’s curriculum and learning choices as they homeschooled two girls in Spanish. The father also began teaching himself the language, and his story and program choices are included. One of the girls has gone on to major in Spanish in college, while the other is not so interested in the language, but has learned what she needs for high school credit and to communicate with others. The booklet shares personal experiences the family had with a few well-known and less well-known programs and lists both the positive and negative aspects of programs so you really get a good idea of what they entail. Tips for setting goals, choosing curriculum, managing costs, and encouraging world language learning are all included. A list of materials and contact information for the publishers of world language programs is also included. This booklet is a great resource for parents who only speak English but want to start teaching their children another language. It will encourage parents and help them see that it’s not as hard as it may seem. Though the tips included may not apply to every student and every learning style, they give a good idea of what kind of products are out there and what you can expect from trying to learn a world language. This booklet is Booklet #2 in the Homeschool Help Series from Christian Novel Studies. 28 pgs, pb. ~ Rachel
