Category Description for Ten Essential Vocabulary Strategies
In teaching, sometimes you need to explain things in more than one way for the student to understand an idea. This program takes the multiple explanation approach to vocabulary building. Vocabulary skills are improved through learning the meaning in a sentence, finding context clues, determining the best word for a blank, learning multiple meanings of a word, looking up dictionary definitions, learning about figurative language, studying synonyms and antonyms, knowing prefixes/suffixes/root words, finding relationships between words, and identifying pairings. Exercises providing explanation and practice is given for each idea. The second section of the book gives short passages of various genres of writing, with questions about underlined words. A short section at the end includes fun vocabulary activities, such as Hink Pinks, Knock-Knocks, idioms and the like. The answer key covers all 5 of the worktexts, but is pretty barebones, as all of the explanation is given in the worktext. Hey, one of the approaches in these books is bound to work for your student.
