Spelling Skills Practice and Apply Grade 7+
Additional Details
Category Description for Spelling Skills (Practice & Apply)
This series seeks to not only apply skills learned in the spelling curricula to other subject areas but also integrates other subjects into spelling. These books can be used on a stand alone basis or to supplement another spelling program, providing extra practice. Each grade level is divided into different units, each covering a different spelling rule. The first page of each unit introduces the word list for that unit and the student gets a chance to practice the correct spelling of each word. Vocabulary and writing pages are also included in each unit, as spelling directly relates to each of these topics. Activities such as fill-in-the-blanks, word webs, crosswords, and word finds are incorporated to brighten the learning process. Book Tie-ins provide suggested literature to accompany each unit. Additional materials such as a glossary, student test pages, and an answer key are included in each book. Each book covers a multitude of skills; the following skills are included in the first three grade levels with increasing levels of difficulty: synonyms, antonyms, homophones, prefixes, suffixes, short vowels, words with multiple meanings, compound words, idioms, prepositions, plurals, possessives, similes, metaphors, and contractions. Fourth grade also covers sequencing, signal words, and measurement. Grade five also includes transition words, states/abbreviations, and literary terms. Sixth grade explores transition words, commonly misspelled words/analogies, and computer terms, additionally. Grade seven plus delves into not only synonyms, antonyms, prefixes, suffixes, similes, and metaphors, but also silent letters, palindromes/alliteration, personification/onomatopoeia, words ending in “ology,” Greek roots, Latin roots, and geography, science, math, history, and government terms. ~ Megan
