I remember attending a workshop by Don McCabe author of AVKO Sequential Spelling many years ago I could see first hand that the way he was grouping words by spelling pattern was so much more effective (and logical) than the disconnected memorization techniques generally used for spelling The length of the word is totally immaterial in Dons approach A root word expanded step by step with different (or additional) prefixes and suffixes is readily recognized and mastered by young spellers instilling confidence Weve used all 7 levels and heartily recommend

I do not believe this program should be used for kids who are struggling spellers The format made sense to me but when carried out my sons were in tears- an uncommon occurrence around hereI believe this curriculum is best suited for kids who need a "nudge" in formal spelling instruction

Love Sequential Spelling!!
We made the switch for our son who is a very logical thinker. I wish I had done it sooner... for the first time is over a year, he isn't fighting me to do spelling! And I am seeing it click in his brain. He gets it now!

Good, but not quite what I expected
I like that it is structured to do spelling everyday with some of the same words or forms of the words. I expected to stay in one word family for a while longer before transitioning to another.

Seems like a good fit for the way my child learns.
Ann H on May 28, 2017
Have a child with dysgraphia, and standard rule based phonics and spelling approaches not working. Hoping a program developed by a guy who suffers from dyslexia will help his spelling.
CHRISTINE J on May 23, 2017
After using several "rule-based" spelling curriculums with no success, I wanted to try a new approach.
Jennifer C on May 19, 2017
One of my children wasn't getting spelling using traditional workbooks,p. He had struggled with phonics and sounding words out. I read in several places that SS was a great product for my visual learner. Two things have helped. First, the focus on word families (seeing patterns). The lists start with one syllable words, add to them. We are practicing syllabication (breaking big words into word parts) and adding prefixes and endings. He is not troubled by big words, but can focus on parts.
Crystal W on May 9, 2017
This was recommended from several sources for my dyslexic son. Looking forward to trying it!
Elizabeth G on Apr 20, 2017
Trying to find a gentle tool to help my poor speller. We use a Charlotte Mason style of learning and this looks simpler and gentler than other spelling curriculum.
Kristen B on Apr 18, 2017
Suggested by other homeschool parents. Great price.
Iris P on Feb 24, 2017
It got good reviews for dyslexic students
Lynn M on Jan 17, 2017
Traditional spelling books were not working for my logical thinking son. I am hoping the patterns in this will make more sense to him.
Karyn H on Jan 11, 2017
A friend of mine recommended this program, and after she showed me how it worked, I am confident that my younger daughter will soar with her spelling.
Olga S on Jan 7, 2017
Daughter is dyslexic, heard good things about it
Karen S on Jan 3, 2017
Desperation after trying 5 spelling methods and books with no retention by my 12 year old son. After 3 weeks, I see him retaining far better than with other spelling series. It is repetitive but this along with All About Spelling which provides rules and their uses, seems to be a great combo for him.
Lori B on Nov 15, 2016
Recommended by a friend. My son is very weak in spelling and I needed something simple for him to understand.

This product was recommended to me by a fellow homeschooling mom and after reading the descriptions of how the curriculum works, I'm convinced it will help my child who struggles with spelling.

I wanted a simple way to have my kids practice spelling. My 10 year old who struggles with spelling took the placement test and he will begin at level 1.
Jennifer S L on Aug 18, 2016
Tried all about spelling for my daughter. It is a great program, but did not work well for her. She is 9 and can hardly spell. Hoping this will work.
Christopher P on Aug 17, 2016
My daughter needed more repetition. This has helped a lot, and I can use it for more than one of my kids.
Lydia F on Aug 11, 2016
Came Highly recommended

It's Suggested for children with Dyslexia, and we suspect dyslexia.
Tabetha B on Jul 28, 2016
Looking for something that is less teacher intensive. The idea that the child learns to spell using word families appeals to me since my son does catch on to concepts with patterns as he is a visual learner. I used a Phonogram spelling program before with him that was successful with my daughter. Not so much for him. So, I'm going to give this one a try. The beauty of Homeschooling! Adjusting to the needs of our children.
Lisa F on Jul 6, 2016
Reviews indicated that it worked well for dyslexic children; my dd appears to be dysgraphic. Hoping it will work for her.
Cindy S on May 17, 2016
It was recommended to me by someone I trust who uses it with her own children. She likes it because she says that it is different than most programmes in that it is based on helping our brains make connections rather than what those connections should be. It also only takes 10 to 20 minutes a day and requires little preparation on parents part.
Karen M on Mar 29, 2016
I have heard good things about this spelling program.

Lizabeth P on Jan 20, 2016
I have a reluctant speller so I wanted something that built upon each lesson. He wasn't doing well with random spelling words. This program is working great for him!
Robin B on Jan 12, 2016

David E on Nov 7, 2015
To help my struggling spellers. It is also a good way to teach them why we spell the words a certain way.

Do you need the Student book to use this? I already have the Teacher's text and the student book looks as though it is just for writing the answers.
Becky on Jul 10, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It's not completely necessary. You could use a notebook to accomplish the same thing. However, on the back of each page (where the student writes his spelling words) there is a little activity for extra practice that you'd miss out on. If you're on a budget (aren't we all), you could skip the student workbook. If you think you'd like the extra practice pages and money is no object, I'd go for it.
Is the student book needed? I already have the Teacher's book. The Student's book appears to just be a response book. Is there any instruction in it?
A shopper on Jul 10, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It does not have any instruction in it. The program can be used without the student book; it just depends on what works best for you. Every other page of the student book is just lined and numbered for writing the daily spelling list on. The other side of each page has some sort of student activity using the current list: scrambled words, word searches, sentences to write, listing words created from letters of a larger word, fill in the blank in sentences. For us it was nice to break out the daily routine and do one of the activity pages, but we did not do all of them. Every 40 lessons there is a test page, but again, it can be done without the response book.
how do i know what level to buy?
A shopper on May 24, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The program says to always start with level 1. I have a dyslexic daughter that I started in level 1 in 7th grade and it has been challenging to her.
