Seeking True Values

Item #: 007168
Grade: 7
Retail: $8.00
Rainbow Price: $7.50

An Amish reading program which portrays a life style in which people cherish Christian traits, and in which children gain insights into how to behave! Families are large and stories are centered around the family and farm. The stories are interesting to children, if our kids are any indicator! One of my favorites is a story from First Steps in which little Rachel discovers, after attempting to help mother shell peas, that watching baby Miriam really is a good way to help mother with meal preparations!

Although many of our customers use the readers as a standalone, we carry the complete reading program, including teacher’s manuals and workbooks. Please note that the teacher’s manuals are necessary for Before We Read, First Steps, and Learning Through Sounds 1 and 2.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about this series of books. My son and I began with Days Go By (first grade primer), and I am getting ready to order the third grade books. We are hooked! We use these books for the reading portion of our language arts study (in conjunction with Easy Grammar and Spelling to Write and Read). The stories are engaging, offer wonderful morals, and develop vocabulary. The best part of the series is the workbooks. There is a preparatory page for each story where the student is introduced to a handful of new words. After reading, there is a "Thinking About the Story" page. The activities on these pages vary and introduce a wide range of skills. Some examples include alphabetizing, sequencing, working with blends and digraphs, and reading comprehension. I have saved all our books to use with my younger children because I feel they will appeal equally to boys and girls. The only thing I will need to purchase is a new workbook for each child. At $1.95 each, that is affordable on any budget! I was skeptical when ordering because of the low price, but I have now recommended them to others. Reading time used to be a chore. My son is now eager to read with me.

The Pathway readers are among the best purchases I have ever made for homeschooling. My son loved reading the books and was excited to see what Peter and Rachel and their friends would be doing on their farm each day. There is absolutely nothing objectionable in these readers since they are written by and used in the Amish community. The books build on each other and my son got hooked on the stories and wanted to keep reading them. These books would complement any phonics/reading program you are already using. I personally love using them over the summer to help with reading skills.

I absolutely LOVE this reading program! I started homeschooling two years ago and bought the Pathway readers for two reasons: first, the price was very reasonable, and second, I knew that the values presented from an Amish perspective would be in line with mine. However, after 13 years of teaching in traditional elementary classrooms, I did not expect to be overly impressed with this series, but boy was I wrong! This series does have great stories, but it also has good reading comprehension questions, vocabulary development, phonics, and grade-appropriate sight words for lower grades, with practice for all of these skills in the workbooks. I personally always use the workbooks, but the books are so well-written with such warm and real characters, that they're also wonderful on their own. One note, the teacher manuals are necessary for the first few books, but not mandatory after that. I truly believe that this is the best reading series for the money, hands down!

I was impressed with these readers from the very first moment I began using them. I have used them with all three of my homeschooled children and plan to use them with our forth next year. They are easy to use and self explanatory. I do use the workbooks and they are very useful and kept our kids' attention (which is important). My kids have different learning styles, but they have all learned to read and have benefited from using Pathway readers. I did not use the teachers manuals until the older grades, but I believe it is a personal preference and depends on how much time you are willing to contribute to "finding" the answers in the stories. I highly recommend these readers for children learning to read and for reading comprehension.

We love the Pathways Readers. They are morally sound, well planned, and interesting. My older children polished their reading through fifth grade with this series, and my youngest child is enjoying her foray into "real chapter books." She is beginning to read fluently and is excited! These stories leave lots of room for critical thinking and discussion, as much is left unsaid and the illustrations are not overwhelming. My daughter has become quite good at using inference to flesh out the stories, and to anticipate the character's reactions.
