This unique, reproducible workbook by Tamara B. Miller is filled with eighteen projects that will make writing fun for kids and teach them to write in different genres. The book provides two writing activities for the following nine different genres: mystery, humorous fiction, science fiction, tall tales, fairy tales, historical fiction, personal narrative, expository writing, and adventure. Each genre section includes an intro that tells about the genre and lists age-appropriate, popular novels in that genre. Teaching tips are also given for each section. Each activity then includes a story starter, a pre-writing page, a pop-up page, and cutouts. The story starter is a paragraphs that describes the premise of the story students are about to write. The pre-writing page provides visually appealing graphic organizers to help students formulate and organize key information to use in their stories. Next, the pop-up pages are templates for creating 3-D projects that illustrate the stories. Students write their final draft on the bottom of the pop-up page. Students can customize their pop-ups by including fun elements like flaps to lift or pieces to slide. The cutouts are used to create the projects and provide step-by-step directions, sketches, and helpful hints for assembly. All you need to finish the projects are the reproducibles included, scissors, glue, coloring utensils, and paper-folding skills. Projects include writing a mystery and constructing a paper room with clues hidden in it, writing a fairy-tale and assembling an interactive castle, writing a narrative about treasured things and then drawing those things in a treasure chest that opens to reveal the riches, and so much more. These projects are so much fun to create that students will barely realize they’re expanding their writing skills. Revision and editing checklists are included, as is a teacher and student assessment rubric. 96 pages, softcover. ~Rachel
