I taught my daughter to read with Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons My daughter was very successful with that and upon completion I turned to Phonics Pathways to continue her instruction That was nearly a year ago and over the course of this year we worked through the entire book Pros: Phonics Pathways is very complete It can take a child that reads nothing up to about a 4th or 5th grade level of reading It includes more complicated phonics patterns that other books do not cover It teaches spelling rules and I anticipate using this as a spelling reference as my child gets older It is very easy to use We basically read a page a day repeating if a certain page is tricky It includes games that could be motivating to some students although requiring prep on the part of the parent Con: Dry dry dry! My child loved the zany stories in Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons When we started Phonics Pathways she wanted to go back to her old book because Phonics Pathways is not nearly so entertaining While she thinks Dewey the Bookworm is cute his inspirational sayings don't do much for her If my child was a reluctant reader I think we'd have to scrap Phonics Pathways and find something else that was more fun This book does work and is a good reference to have on hand but like most things in education it will not be the best fit for every child

This is my first year using Phonics Pathways My first child was a natural reader/speller and I didn't need a phonics program for him Fast forward 3 years and there I had a little one who I could plainly see needed a lot more guidance I decided to give Phonics Pathways a try and I believe I made the right decision It is a very simple and straightforward approach that only takes a few minutes a day yet yields results quickly The author gives plenty of suggestions on how to use the book and there are some reproducible games included which require a small amount of teacher prep I will admit that there have been a few times my daughter has been a bit weary with doing the same thing every day so we've mixed things up by using BOB books and some simple phonics games One feature I like about this book is the "student achievement chart" It allows you to record the date that each new concept is started and then mastered This is especially helpful if you are required to provide documentation of academic progress as is the case in some states Overall I have been pleased with Phonics Pathways and plan to use it as needed with my next 2 children as well

Pathway to Phonics Rocks!
We started using Pathway to Phonics with our youngest son, when he was five. By age six, he was on a fourth grade reading level! We now use it with all four of our children, ages 5-11. What a treasure!

I have utilized a variety of phonics materials to teach my daughter how to read Many products left us both frustrated and in tears Phonics Pathways has been an effective and delightful resource for helping my daughter to learn to read Working through a page or two only requires fifteen - twenty minutes per day Another favorite aspect of this curriculum is that it is non-consumable For a one time low purchase price you can ultimately teach all of your children to read I have recently begun phonics lessons with my four year old son and we both find these lessons enjoyable with this resource Hands down this is my favorite curricula for teaching phonics

I really like this curriculum. It is easy to use and fun for all; even those not studying phonics want to play. I should have gotten this sooner but this is helping make up for not getting it right the first time. Sometimes I think the directions could be a little clearer but as long as I slow back down and read them carefully they are fine. This has been very helpful.

This is my favorite phonics program by far In the past I have used a hodge-podge of materials to teach/tutor phonics with great success but this one tops them all I have been using Phonics Pathways with my preschooler for several months and he is progressing quickly and solidly I love the fact that it's not scripted There is virtually no preparation you just open and have the child read a page It's definitely my favorite homeschool purchase thus far

Teaches necessary skills quickly
After about a week, I've noticed improved skills with my 7 year old's spelling/enunciation. Wish I would've started using this book earlier! The kids get to laugh while we do the lessons - contains some cute humor.

Very Impressed!
I purchased this program because I needed a comprehensive, easy to teach, and affordable phonics program for my 1st grader. I am amazed at the difference in her reading ease in just the past 3 months we have been using Phonics Pathways. By the time we finish this school year, she will know every phonics sounds plus contractions, syllables, etc. My only regret is that I didn't find this sooner. She easily could have completed this program last year in Kindergarten. The only very small complaint I have is the little cartoon drawings with needless sayings. We just ignore them. I would definitely recommend this product.

I believe in phonics based reading as I think it will help the children long term. I like that this book doesn't include DVDs, tapes, apps, etc. as we don't allow our children to do much screen time.

My 4 year old has already started reading some short words and recognizes several sight words. I wanted to find something to help boost his skills without being tedious or overwhelming with him with busy work. I'm hoping this will fit the bill.

Taught all 4 of my kids to read at home using Phonics Pathways as a primer. So clear and simple, and REAL phonics!

My 7 year old is on a fourth grade reading level because of this curriculum. I love how thorough it is and that it can be used to improve reading skills at any age or grade level.

Does my child already need to know the alphabet to use this?
A shopper on Jun 29, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I believe so. This is teaching the sounds that go with the letters. I would recommend this only as a refresher as it moves quickly. However, if you were to slow down and focus on just the one sound for a while and its sound it may be used as an introduction. The phonogram app from All About Reading, which I think is free, could be a big help in pronunciation of the sounds. We came out of this not clearly understanding why or when to use the different sounds of the same letter though. My son could conquer a page of sounds and words but then not always use them correctly later. Of course, we all learn at different points and could just not have clicked for him at the time we used this. We ended up going with All About Reading, wishing I had done so earlier, and my son's speed of understanding has greatly improved. Once they have the alphabet and are asking what sound it makes or you want to give them the sounds and then see if they ask about others, I think this is a good indication they are ready for that phonetic instruction.
Would this help my struggling fourth grade speller/reader?
A shopper on Apr 4, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I think so! I purchased it for my first grader to learn phonics and after we started it, I had my third grader join us everyday because she is my struggling reader/speller. It has exceeded my expectations. My first grader is a very fluent reader and I can see great improvement in my third grader. She actually likes reading now which is huge for her. I definitely recommend this book. And you can't beat the price.
Is there a lot of handwriting required in this program?
A shopper on Apr 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: As a multi-sensory approach to phonics/reading, there are suggestions for writing the letters/words etc. from the very beginning of the instruction (i.e. trace the letter). You would be able to adjust those expectations to the needs of your student as desired.
