My Children (10, 8, and 5) LOVED this book. I read the book out loud to them each night and they would beg for "one more chapter". The story follows Bunyan's classic in a version children can understand. The situations Little Christian and Christiana find themselves facing are applicable to what Christians face everyday. This book brought about great discussions with my children and made me think as well. The chapters are short so you could read one chapter in 10 minutes. I HIGHLY recommend this book. The study guide that goes with the book is useful for encouraging discussions.

You know you have found a literary gem when the read-aloud ends and a child picks it up to read AGAIN! This well-written adaptation of John Bunyan's classic "Pilgrim's Progress" engaged all of our children, ages two to twelve, often interrupting our "normal" day for just one more chapter. Having never read the original, Helen Taylor's rewrite for younger students led us on an unexpected spiritual journey. We were challenged at every turn of the page as Christian and later Christiana encountered the Slough of Despond, the Hill of Difficulty, the lions before the Castle Beautiful, the Dark Valley, and Vanity Fair on the King's Way to the Celestial City. Relating to characters whose names defined their character brought about many discussions concerning our relationships with others. We too depend on the Faithfuls, Hopefuls, and the Great Hearts on our journey. Christian's thoughts are woven into the story and provide a glimpse into our own hearts, revealing at times sinful patterns but also reassurances from the King giving us courage to press on. The application of Biblical truth was clear especially with Little Pilgrim's Progress study guide by Chris Roe in hand. During the read-aloud and long after its ending, one of my children or I would say, "that's just like what Christian faced". His journey is so memorable and applicable to our own. Personally, my resolve to continue on the King's way became stronger while reading about a Little Pilgrim's Progress. We intend to read this again, maybe even mapping Christian's journey or making a game to match places and characters he met. Understandably, this book has sold over half million copies. It's worth is inestimable.
