This book is a children’s version of the original Hinds’ Feet on High Places by Hannah Hurnard. Carefully adapted for a younger audience, this book still maintains the rich vocabulary and inspiring storyline of the original allegory. If you are not familiar with this story, it is about a young girl named Much-Afraid. Although Much-Afraid is a servant of the Shepherd, she still worries a lot, and she is surrounded by her Fearing relatives, like Dismal, Spiteful, Craven Fear, and Self-Pity. When she tells the Shepherd she wants to leave the Valley and go to the High Places, she learns that He has been waiting for her to say those very words. He tells her that the journey will be difficult and dangerous, but He will provide her with two companions to helps her. Also, although she won’t be able to see Him, He reminds her that she only needs to call and he will answer. Much-Afraid begins the long journey, but she faces many doubts and hesitations along the way. Will she ever reach the High Places, or will she turn away from the path the Shepherd has put before her? The story is fully illustrated with gorgeous, colorful pictures. Every few pages, at natural breaking points in the story, there is a page with discussion questions, relevant Bible verses, and a short prayer to pray with kids. This is a wonderful story to read aloud and discuss with children. 116 pages. - Melissa

Angela P. from Fredericktown, OH wrote the following on 04/25/2008:
My children (ages 9, 7, and 5) and I read "Hinds' Feet on High Places" as part of our Bible Study/Character Development portion of our daily schedule. The kids and I absolutely loved this story! We read a portion of a chapter a day (sometimes more because they literally were begging for me to go on), stopping at the designated devotional thoughts. The story itself is beautiful. The allegory is unbelievably simple and easy to apply to our own Christian walks. The "Spend Some Quiet Time" pages that are sprinkled throughout the book (usually one mid-chapter and one at the end of the chapter) are very reflective and encourage meaningful conversations. Each devotion includes a "Think About" which is a very thought provoking application of the portion of the story just read; i.e. "Do you know people who love the Lord, but who still went through lots of sadness and pain?....We have a choice to make when Sorrow and Suffering come our way. We can get upset and angry...or we can thank God and trust Him to take care of us." Next, the devotion includes scripture references to look up in the Bible. Lastly, it includes a prayer which is written with great emotion and is very applicable to a child's life and is then sometimes followed by an instruction to go and put your prayer request into action (i.e. "Find a spot to be alone with Jesus. Imagine yourself on His lap...Tell Him about any hurts you have. Pour out your heart to Him...") Long after we finished reading this book, my children still would reference the characters and story when talking about their own personal struggles. I have often referred back to the story, as well, to remind them of what we read and learned from the main character, "Much-Afraid." In fact, although this is a children's version of this story, while going through some personal struggles, I also was able to apply what I had reaped from this story to assist me in keeping my eyes on the ways of the Lord. We loaned out this book to good friends to use during their Bible Study; her children are ages 12 and 8. She and her children were just as moved and impressed by this simple, beautiful story. I highly recommend reading this story with your children of all ages and also believe that it would make a beautiful and meaningful gift for many occasions. Not many twelve dollars books are as treasured and valuable as this one! I hope you enjoy this book as much as we have!
