I love Heritage studies by Bob Jones Press. Not only was it easy to use but my daughter loved the hands on activities especially when she was younger. While the curriculum is complete I did use a few supplements that made the program that much more interesting. I did save them and used them with all my kids. It's a little pricier but well worth the expense! The curriculum in rich with knowledge and my kids much more out of it than I expected.

If you are looking for a textbook history program that is easily implemented, then BJUP Heritage studies might be worth considering. I have used Bob Jones University's Heritage studies for two of my daughters, at the second and third grade level. The textbook is colorful, including illustrations and photos on almost every page. The text is written on the correct grave level, so that an average student should be able to read and comprehend the contents fairly easily. However, if your student is not yet reading at grade level, the sections are easily adapted for parental read-alouds. This text covers American history at the second and third grade level; however, there are mentions of some other countries and events that happen there; The teacher's manual is of great help. The lesson for each day is ed, with the words to be spoken to the student highlighted in bold print. The publisher also includes maps, discussion questions, supplemental information for clarity, enrichment activities and additional illustrations for student reinforcement that can be photocopied. The teacher's manual has black and white insets of the student pages on the same page as the teacher information; there is no flipping back and forth required...it is all right there in front of you. Also included are the answer keys to the student notebook on the same pages along with the student texts. All told, it seems that the publisher is trying to make it as simple as possible to teach these lessons. The student text merely has reading, pictures and some discussion questions in it. It is nonconsumable, so one could re-use it for additional students. However, the publisher does provide a Heritage Studies notebook to round out the course. This notebook includes crossword puzzles, journaling prompts, and question/ answer activities for the student to complete along with each day's reading. There are sixty eight lessons included in this text. So for the typical thirty six week school year, the publishers assume that one would do 2-3 history lessons a week. If one were to do daily history, one could easily cut some lessons in half, as some are rather long. One could also dig a bit deeper than the textbook does, as in my opinion, some of the topics are covered in very little depth. If one really needed to pinch pennies, I would think that one could get by without the teacher's manual. However it is nice to have everything already divided up into segments, and having additional ideas and activities is always a good thing too. I think that the study might not go as smoothly, but if one really needed too, it would not be hard to omit the teacher's manual. However some of the Notebook lessons would have to be skipped as essential information for doing the pages is included in the teacher's manual. The teacher's manual in my opinion is key to this being an "open and go" type system. All in all, I have been pleased with Bob Jones' Heritage Studies. My daughters have also learned quite a bit about their heritage, which is the true test of a good curriculum.
