I purchased these to use with my 5 & 3 year old, to practice math and classifying skills. When my order arrived, I tucked the container away on the shelf with the rest of our math "toys" hoping to hide them until we began school for the year. My 5 year old found them and begged to play with them. After I said yes, she took the container and began lining up the animals by type and size (classifying). She then went on to tell us how many of each there were (math). When the 3 year old spotted her, they began evenly distributing the animals between them (more math!). Even my eight year old gets in on the play, often creating barnyard battles between the animals (can you guess he's a boy!) We have the teddy bear counters also, but they like these better because they can act out different stories (Language arts from a math manipulative-multi-tasking toys!). The brightly colored animals may not be realistic (use the Safari toobs for that). I'm always looking for items to add to our preschool box, and these are exactly what I hoped for.
