This is a wonderful curriculum that is easy to use with multiple ages!!! A real time saver and a good way to spend time together enjoying learning. It gives such a natural relaxed feeling to learning - not the typical sit and listen and learn feel. Each day and for five days you read the same book. My kids really enjoy this and by the third day they usually giggle and say "Yay, we get to read this book again!" They get more out of it every day. After reading the book the guide gives me questions to ask and things to teach them from the story. There are plenty of options from science, social studies, language arts, art, and math (I think you definitely need another more thorough math and phonics program to go with this). My 6 year old knows more geography than I thought possible! He can point out Italy, France, China, Sri Lanka, Japan...and tell you something special about it like, "There's a bullet train in Japan that goes really, really fast." This book has been excellent for my family.

I have homeschooled for 11 years, and this is the absolute BEST curriculum for young students I have ever seen! It is extremely easy to use, and it is so fun; my 5 year old son has already learned so much after completing only 5 of the books!! The only extra subjects you will need to add to this program are phonics and math (although there is lots of hands-on-math included in the curriculum, it is just not enough). This would be a GREAT choice for a working mom; there is very little preparation. Everything is already written out for you. Thank You Jane Lambert for making learning so enjoyable for student AND teacher!!

I used this curriculum over the summer with my three children (ages 8, 6 and 3). They LOVED it and so did I! Although my 8 year old is able to read very well on his own, he still enjoyed the stories and the time spent together was a blessing. I wouldn't try to do ALL the activities suggested (the book doesn't suggest that you do them all either), but I would try to get as much as you can out of this wonderful curriculum. For us it was a welcome change from more intense traditional "studying."

I have used Five in a Row for six years now, and my little ones and I have enjoyed the time spent together. I feel like Jane Claire is a close and personal friend. Her way of writing and reasuring the homeschool teacher is a treasure which I hold dear to my heart. Five in a Row has truly been a blessing in our homeschool. Wonderful!

This is hands down the best curriculum to use with younger kids. I have used volume 1-3 with my K- 2nd graders. My children learn a huge variety of topics. This is an easy to use curriculum if you want a more relaxed school approach for these younger years. Teacher prep can be as little or as much as you want to put into it. You can just do the lessons from the manual which have very little to no prep or you can add more creative activities and extra books from the library. I consider this to be an excellent value. Basically this manual and a library card is the majority of your curriculum for K -2. You add in phonics and math.

Five in a Row is my all-time favorite curriculum. Volume 1 holds a special place in my heart, as our very first "kindergarten" lesson was from the story of "Ping". I had to "Sell" my DH on "homeschooling" so we did the science lesson first. It was a hit!
Keeping it simple and following the manual makes it easy to teach your children, and the conversational learning "sticks"!
Five in a Row is inexpensive, delightful, and oh so easy to use!

I have to say we just love Five in a Row around here. We started doing it when my daughter had just turned four and it was a wonderful, relaxed, and cozy way to ease into home-learning. The books chosen are fantastic, we have been introduced to so many great titles and authors we would have missed otherwise. We did not always use the books as instructed (5 days a week), sometimes we just did a couple days or used it as a springboard for our own activities.
Just recently, we started volume 2 after a year long break from FIAR and I am sorry we ever quit. FIAR is a great way to get your kids feet wet so to speak in a variety of topics and spark some new interests. My almost 6 and 3 year old both love hearing the stories and doing the activities. I often see them later on making up little stories and games of their own (playing on an imaginary high-wire after reading "Mirette on the High Wire" for example. Highly recommended!

First of all, I need to say the Five in a Row volumes are an amazing tool for our family, and the Christian Character Supplement is no exception. If you are familiar with FIAR, then you know that the books selected are outstanding and full of all things that make a good book touch your heart. The idea of the Christian Supplement is like the icing on the cake for what is already an exceptional family experience. If you are interested in taking the FIAR books and measuring the characters and situations they find themselves in against what Scripture has to say, then this guide is your chance.
I would say that the Christian Supplement is easy to use, and much simpler than the volumes themselves . . . mostly using one page, it cuts right to the chase: Scripture discussion. It is handy to have your Bible, and to have read the book prior, so you can talk through the meaning based on what the book is about. For example, in Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, the traits discussed are flexibility, trusting God, willingness to serve, graciousness, stewardship. . .and makes reference to the Bible using verses from Matthew, Philippians, Luke, and John. All of these are done is easy to use paragraphs.
From my experience, it seems to me that if the child is able to grasp the book's storyline, then it is almost easier for them to then grasp the Christian character examples because they have had a personal experience through the books. I definitely do not think that I could have come up with so many different character aspects backed with Scripture like this guide has done.
It is a great thing to have this type of Godly reference to add to the already meaningful experience using FIAR books. Well worth it!

I have used Five in a Row for several years and love the warm fuzzy feeling we get from spending time together as a family using this curriculum. A lot of the books we found at the library so it made it more affordable for our family and we were able to use it for multiple kids at once. Love how the author has put it together, so simple yet so rich in knowledge without being intimidating.

We have eight children(ages 19-6) and have always homeschooled. I had heard of FIAR, but never tried it. I decided to try it with our two youngest who are 6 and 8. If I had known how great it was, I would have started using it a long time ago! I absolutely love it and so do the children! Our 8 year old described it as the BEST part of her whole day.
