I have homeschooled for 11 years and this is the absolute BEST curriculum for young students I have ever seen! It is extremely easy to use and it is so fun; my 5 year old son has already learned so much after completing only 5 of the books!! The only extra subjects you will need to add to this program are phonics and math (although there is lots of hands-on-math included in the curriculum it is just not enough) This would be a GREAT choice for a working mom; there is very little preparation Everything is already written out for you Thank You Jane Lambert for making learning so enjoyable for student AND teacher!!

This is hands down the best curriculum to use with younger kids I have used volume 1-3 with my K- 2nd graders My children learn a huge variety of topics This is an easy to use curriculum if you want a more relaxed school approach for these younger years Teacher prep can be as little or as much as you want to put into it You can just do the lessons from the manual which have very little to no prep or you can add more creative activities and extra books from the library I consider this to be an excellent value Basically this manual and a library card is the majority of your curriculum for K -2 You add in phonics and math

This is a wonderful curriculum that is easy to use with multiple ages!!! A real time saver and a good way to spend time together enjoying learning It gives such a natural relaxed feeling to learning - not the typical sit and listen and learn feel Each day and for five days you read the same book My kids really enjoy this and by the third day they usually giggle and say "Yay we get to read this book again!" They get more out of it every day After reading the book the guide gives me questions to ask and things to teach them from the story There are plenty of options from science social studies language arts art and math (I think you definitely need another more thorough math and phonics program to go with this) My 6 year old knows more geography than I thought possible! He can point out Italy France China Sri Lanka Japanand tell you something special about it like "There's a bullet train in Japan that goes really really fast" This book has been excellent for my family

What a wonderful curriculum Five in a Row is As my child is now going into 9th grade I look back on the year we used this curriculum with fond memories We were introduced to wonderful authors such as Allen Say Virginia Burton and Robert Frost All the books were available at our local library which made it very cost effective We learned about different cultures and countries such as Japan and France to name a few Five in a Row is what you envision homeschooling early elementary ages to be cuddled up on the couch reading interesting children's books and doing related activities I recommend this curriculum to all parents who are homeschooling their little ones The only thing I did supplement was a math curriculum

I have used Five in a Row for six years now and my little ones and I have enjoyed the time spent together I feel like Jane Claire is a close and personal friend Her way of writing and reasuring the homeschool teacher is a treasure which I hold dear to my heart Five in a Row has truly been a blessing in our homeschool Wonderful!

Five in a Row is my all-time favorite curriculum Volume 1 holds a special place in my heart as our very first "kindergarten" lesson was from the story of "Ping" I had to "Sell" my DH on "homeschooling" so we did the science lesson first It was a hit! Keeping it simple and following the manual makes it easy to teach your children and the conversational learning "sticks"! Five in a Row is inexpensive delightful and oh so easy to use!
May 27, 2011
I used this curriculum over the summer with my three children (ages 8 6 and 3) They LOVED it and so did I! Although my 8 year old is able to read very well on his own he still enjoyed the stories and the time spent together was a blessing I wouldn't try to do ALL the activities suggested (the book doesn't suggest that you do them all either) but I would try to get as much as you can out of this wonderful curriculum For us it was a welcome change from more intense traditional "studying"
December 24, 2007
Perfect for multiple age groups.
This was our first experience with five in a row and we have loved using it this semester. We enjoyed the book selection so much we raced ahead and borrowed from the reading list on the second book. The activities and information presented in the manual are very helpful, on point and can be as simple and quick or as in depth as your child's age and interest dictates. We have been using it with our pre-K, 1st grader and 2nd grader as a Social Studies curriculum and it has been a joy to use. Great program.

Excellence curriculum
We love reading! A literature based curriculum is perfect for us. The selection of books is great, and the flexibility and options for lessons are what I love best about the curriculum. Will be purchasing the next volume when we finish this one.

Who did the video review for 5 in a row?
A shopper on Jul 18, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The video was prepared by a Rainbow customer.
Is the manual all I need?
Kendra P on Feb 5, 2016
BEST ANSWER: You can check out all these books at the library if you want to save money and that way all you need is the manual. My sister in law does it that way. However, if the library doesn't have the book, you have to be somewhat flexible with what story you do that week. I bought the manual and the book package mainly because it seemed more convenient and I wanted to add to our home library anyway. The books are wonderful! We read them over and over! Part of the reason why I'm happy we bought the package. Hope this helps :)
Does book one cover a whole school year? Or do we need to buy all 4 books for a complete year?
Megan C on Apr 7, 2017
BEST ANSWER: From the Five in a Row website: First of all, in the real world of home schooling few families study more than 30-35 weeks per year after holidays, illnesses, vacations, etc. So if you were to work straight through it would take about 2 school years to complete the FIAR lessons. But, with early learners you’re going to choose only one, or at most 2 of the simplest activities. Make a note of which lessons you’ve completed in the margin of your teacher’s manual and then when your children are a bit older you can come back a RE-visit this familiar, beloved story and complete the several other lessons you didn’t use the first time through.
What edition is this?
A shopper on Oct 19, 2017
BEST ANSWER: There is only a single edition of Five in a Row, Volume 1. However, several years ago the books were updated with new covers and spiral binding. We carry the updated cover edition.
